My USC wife and I are living in the UK and of course the immigration process is so long that we are thinking about wider issues appearing in the meantime, such as health insurance.

When we return to the US, my wife will be seeking to take up her profession within a month or two - but the time from now until then (possibly January 08), means that if a 'health condition' develops with either or both of us between now and then, it would be excluded from any health insurance arranged at that time...

As an American she knows the dire finacial consequences of that and is worried about it..

Apart from taking out insurance now, which would be a year's wasted premiums as we are in the UK, can anyone think of any better strategies to reduce this worry ?

You can get immigrant health insurance via many companies in the UK. That is not the same as travel insurance of course. I did this until I was established with health insurance here. It costs about 65 quid a month if I remember rightly but that was for fairly extensive coverage. I didn't need to take a year's coverage, just on a month by month basis. As for your wife, she'll have to search for health insurance in the US, which can range from pretty damn awful to quite good. But it all costs $$$ as you know...

Searching the site will probably come up with links to the UK companies, or use your old friend, Google.
