Who was being prosecuted and for what? Can you link the article you mention?

Does mitigate against a future visa if a student knowingly enrolled at an institution like that imo.

A million articles on google and in the Indian online press.

US colleges are expensive. It doesn’t pass the common sense test (and one assumes someone applying for masters has some decent level of intelligence) to apply for an expensive, graduate-level degree without researching the university and its courses, professors, job prospects etc first.

(I have two masters degrees, by the way. I understand in principle why people would do more than one. The second one I did was aimed at mid career working professionals and a number of my course mates already had masters, in fact two or three of them had PhDs already! Nothing wrong with wanting to continue learning, if that’s the actual aim. Needless to say the school and course was properly researched, by all of us. Can’t imagine any of us would have thought a school like Farmington was legit.)

Yup, my training doesn’t lead me to post unattributed out of context quotes, even on a forum ;) I like to be able to see the source.  Don’t spend any time on Indian online press, etc.

What would be the point of USCIS going to the trouble of opening a fake university to sting people who want to abuse the student visa process and then allow these same students to be approved when making an application through a legitimate university? I'm not trying to browbeat the OP here. I just want to know what the true purpose of the fake university was. Seems like a lot of expense the USCIS is incurring to simply teach applicants to do it the right way.

From the wiki article it seemed like a or the main target was the middlemen (recruiters), who presumably were doing this across a number of visa mills for many more students. Still, the numbers mentioned here must be a drop in the ocean and it seems a curious way to address this issue. There should be some form of system where better scrutiny of colleges used in student visa applications is used and cut off at that source, which would also help protect any students who genuinely believed they were applying to a legit college.

The reason you did two masters, and the reason OP (and many Indian nationals) do it are very different. The way OP described hopping colleges is primarily to work and not study, usually with day1 CPT type offers. And the other reason is simply attempts to stay back in the US than return to India. Shady stuff! The usual progression is F1 to H1B under a Masters quota. Ultimate aim is to get a green card. (Almost) No one intends to return to India.

I remember reading about this and others and I certainly do not read Indian media.

There is a similar scam in the UK currently.

From my recollection like has been mentioned nobody ever planned to go home, often large amounts had been borrowed with the only method of paying back to be to stay.

That somebody who intended to do a Masters would not have done some basic research to ascertain if a College met their educational needs beggars belief.

Agree, I was stating it as contrast.

read a bit more, definitely seems the target was the recruiters more than the students => students got deported but recruiters got prosecuted. This was the second fake ICE university btw. Definitely lots of interesting reading around recruiters/agents etc. gotta feel sorry for the legit ones among all the shady ones.

OP, this is an unfortunate situation that you have landed yourself in. No experienced member on here can advise you on the certainty of you being granted another visa. This article gives you the full story on Farmington University - if you haven't read it already - and explains the how and the why: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Farmington

I find it very strange that if a university is accepting me to complete my Masters, there would/should have been some type of paperwork tying us to each other as school to student. Also, how/who did you pay for this....who did you speak to? Did any of the interactions not raise red flags for you????

For example, if I have an appointment with a doctor that I've never heard of, I ALWAYS Google them, their practice, their reviews and their board certs.....much less for a university who is offering to let me write my Masters. I'm just thinking that the whole thing was fishy and you got caught in the net.

You'd have to go to some great lengths to prove you were innocent and truly did not know that this was some type of visa mill sting operation by the DHS.

i'd say your chance of getting a visa is near 0.

I'd start looking for employment in India.

If for whatever reason you must live in a different country, look Australia, NZ, Singapore, Canada, UAE...

Dont mean to sound mean here but the fact you joined a fake university, and you are from India i dont want to generalize but your chances are getting one are slim to none.  USCIS wont have any sympathy with whatever you come up with proof wise.

Trumps changing policy's and is coming down on immigration fraud especially in the H1B area as well as other visa's.  from high fraud countries like India, and others.

Wish you all the best of luck but you will be better seeking employment in another country as whatever visa you attempt to come back to the US will be scrutinized.

Some people do multiple Masters for whatever reasons in varying fields for various reasons. It amazes me why people would do it tbh. I am doing my MBA right now and that is the ONLY Master's I will ever do. But I do think that the OP is using this to stay in the USA.

Wrong. I have MBA and PhD from UCLA. In fact, your MBA without other advanced degree now-days is worthless. No one needs MBA without deep specialty knowledge. I can tell you this as a CEO of a company.

Just how many masters do you need? Why the need for second (or third)? Are they in the same field?

Or just a ploy to stay in the US and work?

Likely H1B didn't get picked up.

University admission is a months-long process if it is a genuine academic institution. I see numerous posts on mainly India-centric forums from those either on a B2 or a denied H1 after student status looking to join shady visa mill for-profit schools.

IRC you have 2 attempts at H1B Lottery and after that tata bye bye if your's wasn't pciked.

Workaround? join another university and do it via CPT.

It's nothing illegal about doing this, as long as university is recognized, students are attending classes etc, I know a few that many leverage as it requires only 1-2 in class attendance and rest is online.

My previous colleague had to do it and currently two more are doing it.

Problem is these fake universities  being setup, and an applicant knowingly applying there...

The whole premise is:

  1. Setup fake university
  2. get a few to sign up.
  3. the few spread the words you can join and maintain status, no classes nothing, just a fee.
  4. more student join.

I think DHS is catching them based on 3, knowngly committing fraud with USCIS.
