Wasn't my point.   Point was simply that the GC is a valid ID.

I know. Just a reminder that even as an alternate ID, it won’t be available to the OP for some time after entry ...

Unlike the other poster in this thread, however, the OP is on an immigrant visa and can easily go get an SSN and driver's license asap.

Is an expired foreign passport with an endorsed IV still considered a GC?

Well, an intending legal immigrant enters with a Green Card once the IV visa is stamped.  Is that a valid ID?  I assume it is as long as the passport is valid.  If you are referring to just the physical Green Card, then you have a point, but the term Green Card takes on multiple forms.

The green CARD takes on one form that being the I 551 CARD.  LPR status can be proven in multiple ways, including but not limited to the I551 STAMP and the I551 CARD

YMMV

Btw, it is not called an I551 Card, it is simply called an I551.  I know what you meant, but leaving out details can cause confusion.

Technically you won’t need 6 months validity on your passport.

Practically some airline clerks don’t know the rules.

Regardless, renewing your passport from inside the USA versus in your country of nationality is a pain.  I would renew before you fly.

I just don't see people using it very much

Probably because it is $500 to replace a lost GC vs $40 to replace a lost driver's license.

incorrect

For immigrant visa applicants, the passport must be valid for travel to the U.S. and must have at least eight months validity beyond the issuance date of the immigrant visa or the interview.

This is for visa issuance. I believe the OP asked for port of entry into US with immigration visa.  The passport will be still valid for travel in July/August.

Most airlines and POE at many countries require 6 months validity on the passport. I would double check with the airline and the country you are going to travel to. Just to be safe, I would renew your passport as you have a few months before you plan to travel.

I renewed the same day. Now hopefully on Monday I will get my new passport. Should I staple both after receiving new passport?

thanks

No. Do not do anything to either passport. It’s actually not your property.. it’s the property of the issuing authority .. so just carry them together .. an elastic band around the two is fine .. but no staples glue tape etc

No, no Staples needed. Just keep both passports with you. The look at the visa in one, and then stamp the new one. That's how ours was done. I think you did the smart thing by renewing. I never want to see people have problems myself, but know if anything weird happens that you could never had fathomed, you will be covered. Good luck with your journey.
