Immigrant visa any requirement to travel soon?

My immigrant visa was issued in April and will expire on 7th October. My passport will expire on 29th October. So I was planning to travel in July or August. Will I need to travel soon as possible or I can travel in my planned trip?

Also passport expiry will be only 2months or 3months. I hope that wont affect in immigration visa?

Most airlines and POE at many countries require 6 months validity on the passport. I would double check with the airline and the country you are going to travel to. Just to be safe, I would renew your passport as you have a few months before you plan to travel.

You are on immigration visa, so validation of passport is not required.  6 months rule is for non-immigration.

True, but it would really suck to get here and have something happen where you have to leave the United States, and your stuck here trying to get a passport renewed at your countries consulate or embassy in order to travel. And what are you going to use for identification after the passport expires? I just see something coming up where you will need valid government identification, and not have it. Before my fiancee came on her K1 we renewed her passport a week before we left her country because her passport only had 14 months remaining on it, and knew it would take longer than that to get US citizenship and a passport here. So even with her K1 Visa in her older passport we had no problems at POE, and her current passport is good for another 4.5 years still.

If you are coming on a K1, I definitely recommend having more than 2 months left on your only form of government issued ID. You won't be getting anything here in the US for a good 6 months after arrival. If you come on a CR1, you should have your green card pretty soon after arrival, but I'm not sure how that does for satisfying the government ID requirements at banks and other places.

I just personally wouldn't travel to a foreign country with only a few months left on my passport, just leaving yourself open to issues later.

Even if you get a new passport, visa in the old passport is still valid. You'll just have to travel with two passports.

Is the green card issued by the government?  If so it qualifies as a government ID

YMMV

Good to know. I just don't see people using it very much. But we have used my now wife's passport well over 10 times for banks, getting things notorized, even when the police stopped her as a witness to a crime. She had a state ID for the length of her I94, but that is not valid anymore, so the only thing she has is her passport until EAD arrives. OP can do whatever is good for her, if a K1 I would renew for sure as the green card or EAD is months away from receiving if you enter on a K1, actually years away for the green card in most cities, and 5-6 months for EAD/AP.

incorrect

For immigrant visa applicants, the passport must be valid for travel to the U.S. and must have at least eight months validity beyond the issuance date of the immigrant visa or the interview.

No 6 months and the OP is fine.

Actual GC won’t be on hand for some time.  Best to not be without valid home country passport IMO

Wasn't my point.   Point was simply that the GC is a valid ID.

YMMV
