I truly miss my diesel VW.  And I’ve been saying for awhile now that electric vehicles don’t really save much energy.

This environmentalist stuff reminds me of the low-water-use toilets that need to be flushed 3 times to achieve what one regular flush could accomplish.  Such a benefit.

This is actually an error as the Volt is not a pure EV, but in fact is a Hybrid.  It would have been more correct to show a Tesla, Leaf, or Bolt.

 

As to the OP, I always cringe when I hear someone express a BEV as a zero-emission vehicle.  When I explain to them that the CO2 levels to actually produce a BEV equals about 60-70k miles of an ICE car they look at me funny.  It just goes to show that people really just want to believe the hype.

Absolutely love my diesel SUV.  It's unfortunate that the VW scandal caused most manufacturers to quit selling diesels in this country.

 

Noticed in Russia how many cars have had a simple conversion to allow them to run on gasoline OR natural gas.  Does not cost much and does not require a special infrastructure.  And in Russia the natural gas is cheaper.

It is interesting, GM is still selling diesels, I believe the new Equinox and Terrain has a diesel option and the new Cadillac XT4.  Not sure for how much longer.

My husband misses his diesel he had in the UK, and still has his heart set on a Suburu. But he's been saying this about electric cars for ages now and how much more waste it creates.. as much as he'd love to see technology advance in this field.

Outside of the Equinox with a weak 1.6L diesel, the others don't list a diesel option on their website.  

Not long ago I looked at the Land Rover Discovery diesel.  Wife didn't like it as much as the Mercedes diesel we have, and I worry a lot about the Land Rover/Jag reliability issues.  Going to stick with what I have for now.   Need something that is strong and can tow 5000+ lbs.  3L diesel SUV fits the bill nicely.

Yeah, probably not going to get 5000 pounds with an Equinox or XT4.

 

Btw, my understanding is that renewable diesel fuel (not the same as biodiesel) is even cleaner than electric.

I had  VW Jetta diesel.  Got great mileage, max was 53 mph.  But 38-42 was possible even in town.  Had to sell it when "diesel gate" happened because they offered to buy it back at substantially more than I paid for it.

The funny thing is that most of those VW buy-backs ended up be parked at the old Pontiac Silverdome parking lot which is relatively nearby the VW North American HQ.  I think some of them were stolen at some point.

Yes, I remember flying over that lot and seeing them.  Amazing at how many were parked there.  Are they still (mostly) there?

Most of them are gone now along with the Silverdome itself.  I assumed they were crushed.
