Hey,

Has anyone shipped or planning to ship stuff to the USA, i will be heading out myself on May 9th, but i want to ship my computer ahead of me ( its cheaper to ship it than to replace it ) i looked at UPS/ Fedex, possibly parcel force, and its not even a cost thing, but what forums are needed, UPS told me the commercial invoice was needed, which new already, but they told me CBP form 3299 was also needed, so i downloaded it, and it makes no sense, surely there has to be easier ways to ship things to the USA.

So yea, any advice would be great.

Is this a desktop PC? If small enough it would certainly be possible to unassembled into suitcases and transport on the plane as extra baggage. You could purchase additional travel insurance to cover electronics. This is what my husband did with a ton of his electronic devices.

Are you sure it's worth or cheaper to ship rather than replace new? You'll be needing power coverters for it to even use it in the US.

Just ship it to someone you know in the United States. Ups, FedEx use a simple customs form you fill out when shipping, and just put or check the gift box on the form because you are not selling it, just sending it. You could ship it to yourself even, and have them hold it at the terminal so you can pick it up. The custom form for private shipments is about 1/2 a page, and really simple, not sure what you had given to you,but I think it was wrong.

Yes its a desktop, but its hardware is over £2500, it will cost me alot less to ship than to replace, the power coverter part is not an issue, i just need to swap out the PSU inside the system.

I shipped half our belongings last year, including "complicated" things like tools and a piano and had numerous forms to fill in. Again, what doesn't make sense?

Regarding the shipping of goods to the US, I'm in the process of sending my life in 5 medium-sized boxes via freight using a local company near me. The grand total of sending items such as my PS4, stacks of games, books and other such items is setting me back by £500 or so, and it actually includes basic insurance up to the value of things I'm sending.

I'd recommend trying to find a place near you; it's surprising what options are out there!

The company I used is called Pack & Send, based in Lincoln, and they also do collection from UK residential addresses for a very small fee (which is ideal for me, since I only have a Mini... :P).

The form is asking for info that i dont know, UPS told me that any info i dont know just leave blank,

He also said that even though its a personal computer for personal use and not for resale etc, that import costs will still be charged.

He's correct. What specific info don't you know?

As an immigrant you can send all your household goods duty free. The form CBP 3299 is the form that should accompany such goods. Otherwise there will be duty to pay on £2500 value.

In my experience (I used to do shipping for more than 10 years) DHL is the best company for international shipping.  There are forms you need to fill out about what you are shipping, contact person, phone number, address, etc...but it's pretty straight forward.

Hi Amy,

Out of curiosity, how big are these boxes/how heavy are they?

I shipped a suitcase in 2017 and it cost me around £100, but weighed around 22kg...so thinking I may do that again, if I can’t fit it all on the cruise...

Thanks
