Do you request a new social security card when you get your green card?

I received a social security card when I moved to the USA under a working Visa. It has the following written across it:

'Valid for work only with DHS authorization'

I've been using this ever since I moved here but I received a green card so I'd assume that my social security card should no longer say this?

I'm worried if I change jobs it may raise questions.

I've googled this to death but I can't find any info.

It’s not a big deal. I actually changed mine cuz I was changing my last name. They took that part off without any issue. You can get it taken off good luck

Once you become a U.S citizen and go to SSA to update your status from permanent resident to U.S citizen, you will be given a chance to replace your current social security card but it doesn't hurt you if you choose not to .

'Valid for work only with DHS authorization' on social security card means nothing since you have to present with either your green card or U.S passport to prove that you are legal to work in U.S anyway. Even you have no "'Valid for work only with DHS authorization'" mentioned on the social security card, you still need your GC or U.S passport.

We were figuring on getting a new card at that time (after GC) because that would mean only one trip to get a card that says Anastasiia [my last name] and that doesn't have the "DHS Authorization" text; I don't know if that's the best plan, but it seems like it is.

This is not true, if you get that wording removed from the SSC all you need for employment verification is the card and a drivers license.

I highly recommend getting a new card.

I have become U.S citizen since 2013 and I've never changed the SSC and got no issue at all..  You can replace one if you like but no harm if you choose not to..

That wasn't my point. You don't need to show a green card or passport to prove employment authorization if you have a card without the wording, which is why it's recommended you get it removed as soon as possible, as things can get complicated during ROC for example. You said you still need to show a green card or passport with a SSC, which is incorrect.

Hi Mollie09, are you saying that not changing social security card to remove 'Valid for work only with DHS authorization' may affect ROC somehow? I didn't change mine since I just never had time for that.

It won't affect ROC, but if you switch jobs while ROC is processing (like I did) it's much easier to use DL + unrestricted SSC than it would have been to use expired GC + NOA and explaining what it all means. Since ROC takes over a year, it's my recommendation to get it done before the GC expires.

For me the best question would be “ Is there any reason why I shouldn’t get it changed now ?  My answer .. “No”.... I’d get it done now .. done !

Yeah, when you're outside of the country its not that easy to change it. I'm not going to travel back to the US just to update my information with social security office.

Thank you! As long as it doesn't affect the ROC I'm fine.
