Yes. The govt ruled about 4 years ago that no one seeking refugee outside of the UNHCR process would ever be settled in Australia. The process has been offshore detention with resettlement being arranged in other countries for those whose refugee status is validated. Success of this policy ?? A great reduction in boat arrivals .. the Australian equivalent of migrant caravans .. so far fewer drowning deaths  of those risking the route..but for those interred under the policy it has not resulted in good quick outcomes

I'm at least glad to hear that there are fewer drowning deaths. Those are always sad to see.

Yes. Like here its a catch 22. The driving force of the decision was to make it so unappealing to try that route that the people smugglers would be put out of business. That has been a good result .  There were a number of shocking incidents prior to that when unseaworthy boats loaded with families sank and many children died.

The situation all round is sad and tragic.. and the answer is anything but simple or straightforward

Even as the spouse of a French citizen I have to apply for a long stay visa (Visa de long sejour) outside of the country if I plan to stay longer than 90 days. The visa can not be denied however and as the spouse of said French citizen it's free. I can then enter France and request a French Residence card that  needs to be renewed each year. A physical exam is required too. Once I have the Residence card I can work legally. Every country has it's own process.

Yes, every country has its own process for sure. Actually, right now one of the main reasons my husband and I are here in the US and not in Russia is because of Russia's absolutely insane immigration system, even for spouses of Russian citizens it's super crazy, complicated and long. It's also a lot more restrictive. Even if I were to get temporary residence in Russia (necessary before permanent residence) I would have to apply for a travel exit permit every time I left Russia....I think this is a left over from the USSR as well as the fact that Russia does not care about attracting immigrants at all, they make it as prohibitively difficult and want to turn off foreigners from trying to live there.

When my husband and I were weighing up the pros and the cons of where we should stay after marriage, despite all the paperwork including ROC, it's easier for him to live here as my spouse than for me to live in Russia as his spouse. We eventually want to go back to Russia permanently one day, maybe when things are different there politically...it's been a downhill avalanche for Russian-American relations ever since 2014, but even worse on the Russia side for Americans than vice versa.

So I totally get people moving here due to the spouse's home country making it extremely difficult for the USC to live in theirs.

I don't even know where to start :) If you want to see the sights, visit places you saw in pictures in real life but you are absolutely OK with your country and want to live there. No? I thought it is obvious, the US is not the best country in the world and not everyone wants to live there no matter what. Even though it seems to me that Americans do think that everyone is dreaming about moving here.

There are different situations and sometimes you have to compromise to be with the person you love.

This is one thing I truly dislike about Americans.  A lot of my coworkers assume that everyone in Mexico is dying of hunger and wants to come live here and it’s not true.  My neighbors when I live in Sonora, Mexico had jobs, houses, cars, lives and family in Mexico and only wanted to come to Arizona/Texas/California for a once a year family trip to Disneyland or make a one hour drive to Tucson to blow cash on Nike’s and Gucci at the Tucson Outlet and then go back home to Sonora.

Where do you think Americans get their impressions?  Thank you, CNN and MSM.

I was thinking the same a Progressive view.

So my question to you is why are you mad at USCIS when it's LA County's fault that they can't get their stuff together????

Does not matter. Once you are married within the 90 days, then the K1 purpose has been met,

6.1)...How soon after we get married should we apply for Adjustment of Status?
A..Right away, or at least right after your honeymoon. You should make every effort to get the Adjustment application filed within 90 days of the fiance(e) entering the United States as indicated on the I-94.

Filing for Adjustment of Status within the 90 days protects your legal status. Your legal status expires after 90 days, married or not. The only way to protect your legal status is to apply for Adjustment of Status, and the only way to maintain continuous legal status is to file for AOS within 90 days or arriving. On the practical side, it is often difficult to arrange for the marriage, and get all the paperwork ready in time to file for AOS within 90 days. Many couples have filed for AOS a few days or weeks after the 90 day limit with no problems. Thus far, many experiences have shown this is not a major issue with local USCIS (INS) offices.

Besides which, if LA County fails to ever deliver a marriage cert and then denies ever receiving a signed marriage license, then the couple cannot prove it married before the 90 days.

You came off as being mad so I just assumed you were mad. My apologies for assuming that but I get why you are frustrated with LA County. I have been very frustrated with LA County in the past as well since they love to cater to Illegals more than they do USCs or Legal Immigrants.

They would prove it with the NOA1 once they file for the AOS. Since we all know it is easier for someone that entered on a visa or esta than it is for someone that ewi.

Then you can file after the 90 day window since there are no repercussions for doing that. Once you get the marriage license it will show the marriage date on it.

Dunno. Graft, corruption, incompetence, ... Pick your deadly sin.

I just chalk it up to incompetence because it is LA County. Since they have "lost voters" in the past.

You so right about this and I thought so as well before I met my old neighbors in CA. When I met my neighbor whose family was from Mexico they introduced me to their family who were hard working professionals that had tourist visas for the USA.

It really opened up my eyes because I thought the whole of Mexico was like TJ.

I've been exposed to the asylum process recently.

There's an incredible chasm between groups of those who apply.

E.g., the Venezuelans are typically middle- & upper-class people who escaped and arrived here on tourist visas.

They already have plans for their new lives and will hit the ground running, if approved for asylum.

Conversely, more of the Central Americans are of lower class, and some are even illiterate in their native language.

These can barely assist others in completing the necessary asylum paperwork on their own behalf.

I have it on ultra-reliable, unquestionable authority that the question "If you are approved for asylum status, what do you have to offer the United States?" is not part of USCIS's asylum interviews.  This sobers and frightens me.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
