It took about 3.5 weeks for them to clear up whatever it was holding up his final approval. 

After rereading - doesn’t appear there was any particular reason for it, just they knew they’d need to do extra processing. Taking it as a good sign for our case, selfishly, but again after the other posts on here AP can take any amount of time. Looking forward to Monday to hear some good news :)

I just had my interview yesterday, was told approved and passport back within a week :)

Interesting I wonder what happens if you actually need your passport whilst it's being held for an indefinite period by the US Embassy!

They don't normally keep it if they think the additional processing will be a long one. Sometimes the interviewer doesn't know it will be any additional time. You can ask for it back if you have immediate travel. Then when you are through traveling or the embassy has completed a long AP, you send it back via courier as this FAQ describes--

 

If you have been asked to submit your passport or any additional documents, you should log on to your account via https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-gb and print off a Courier-in Receipt.
