Certified translation - Apostille?

Hello, I am looking at getting a certified translation of my french birth certificate and police report for the K1 visa. Would I need a Apostille too? If yes, my translation service is asking me if I need one from inside or outside illinois.

Thank you for your quick answer! Would the embassy would be ok with just a copy of the translated document or need an original of the translation? 

I am able to receive an electronic and mail copy of my translation.

A copy is fine.  I had all of the documents done by a service and received them as pdf’s electronically.  I paid a couple of dollars for a letter of authenticity (also only in pdf) though it probably wasn’t necessary.  It was all fine.

I agree in principal...everything about sending in documents indicates that copies are fine (sometimes you need "certified true" copies--like marriage certificates), but if possible, I would have originals--or letter of authenticity as noted above---ready to show at the interview "just in case." Will they ask for it? Probably not, but better safe than sorry if you can get and bring originals.

From the London embassy website:

Translations 

All documents not in English must be accompanied by an official, certified translation in English. The translator must provide  a signed statement confirming that the translation is accurate.  Only one copy is needed. The translation does not need to be notarized.

Note: Applicants are also required to bring the original document, in the original language.

By "certified", they mean a signed statement saying saying it is an accurate and complete translation. It doesn't even have to be a paid service. Anybody fluent in both languages can "certify" they are fluent and provided an accurate translation.

There is a European format for the "birth certificate". When I got mine (the Dutch system is weird and you don't get one when you are born) The woman behind the counter asked me if I wanted that one instead. It was accepted by both the embassy (K-1) and the USCIS (AOS). You might be able to get one of those.

Otherwise, self translate and certify as stated above.

I used a website called "Day translation" to get a certified translation of my document in french. They did provide as well a certificate/letter with the translation.
