No, you can get a temporary Florida drivers license without EAD with the I-94 unexpired and 30 days left remaining, you will have to have an insured vehicle in Florida to take the drivers exam. Florida is the only state I have ever heard of where you can actually rent a car that’s insured specifically for taking the drivers test.

Hm that is the thing, being a Canadian we are allowed to swap our license directly for a Florida state license without any testing since our rules are the same in Canada when it comes to driving. The problem is getting a company to insure a vehicle you buy in the states was what I was thinking about. But I don't want to hijack your thread for my questions :)

I don't think insurance is a big issue. Most states also require the new immigrant to prove legal presence in the US and state residence.....can't do that in most states unless you have an unexpired I-94, EAD, or Green Card...........that's what happens to many K-1s.

You are correct sir. FYI.... I was told by a friend who knows what he is talking about and older than me and he said there are people at the Florida DMV who rent insured vehicles and different types (say you are short and need a very small car it’s your comfort level) to take the drivers test if you need a car that’s insured. Insurance should not be a problem.

In NJ they give you drivers license up to date of i-94, and second option is to use NOA1 for the green card (I-485) to get license for 6months.

Later on when Ead and GC come in just extend license.

Sounds like Florida skips the NOA1 option. FYI I went to a few different NJ DMV locations until they gave me an answer I liked and we got the license

We were able to add my husband to my auto insurance before he received his combo card.
