Hello!

We need info on when I can get my SSN!

I entered the USA March 29th.

We are getting married next weekend.

The lady at the marriage certificate office said that after getting married it would take two weeks to get a raised seal marriage certificate.

After that we can take it to the SSN office and change my name get me a SSN.

THEN

She said we can send in our Marriage certificate with the form to adjust my status as a permanent citizen to the government.

Is any of this correct? Im under a K1 and it says the filing fee for even sending in eveeything will be well over 1,000 dollars.

Please help i have extreme anxiety and dont want to be sent back to Canada.

It is suggested to obtain an SSN prior to marriage. Sometimes the SSA staff incorrectly will not issue one after marriage until you obtain an EAD or green card. It's the path of least resistance to get one prior to marriage.

Note that either way, an SSN is not required to apply for permanent residence (I-485). The SSN field is only required if you have one.

After marriage, if you still have at least 14 days of legal status remaining (you get 90 days from POE), you can go to the SSA and attempt to get them to issue a new card with the new name there. There's no fee for a new card.

That said, again SSA staff may or may not issue one in the new name until you have an EAD or green card in the new name. It took my wife 3 visits to find somebody who was able to do so.

SSA staff aren't immigration experts, and K-1 is a bit of an oddball visa that some offices don't see all that often.
