Citizenship Document Checklist (basis of marriage)

My spouse is applying online for Citizenship shortly (on the basis of marriage).  We have the following documents... please let me know if there is anything we are forgetting before submitted online:

1. A photocopy of both sides of Permanent Resident Card (Green Card).

2. Two identical scanned color photographs, with name and A-number written in pencil on the back of each photo (went to CVS and purchased passport photos).

3. A scanned photocopy of my USC spouse's birth certificate proving that he is a legal American citizen (since we are applying on the basis of marriage).

4. An official scanned "copy" of our marriage certificate.

5. An IRS tax return transcript for the last three years (proving we both filed married jointly).

6. And then the obvious completed N-400 form and payment.

This is both our first marriage, so we don't require any of the prior divorce documents or we never did any lengthy travel outside of the US.  And is the IRS tax return transcript in lieu of sending in copies of our actual tax returns?  Are we missing anything? I assume we don't need photos of us for this one? And since submitted online it will only be copies of these documents...  It just seems like a small application package since the last few were huge! LOL

When I applied for naturalization (same as you - marriage), I only uploaded my spouse's proof of citizenship and our certified copy of the marriage certificate.

Those were the only documents.  Of course you can upload other documents to strengthen your case.

For "Documents referring to you and your spouse:", I stuck in the latest one of a joint bank account and water bill that had both names on it. Those were just an update of sorts from the ROC package the year before.

The passport photos are only for those who reside overseas. See the instructions and checklist. https://www.uscis.gov/system/files_force/files/form/attachments.pdf?download=1

This is not needed UNLESS you are applying for the N400 from OUTSIDE of the United States.

Photo will be taken at biometrics appointment.

You didn’t mention kids. If you have any kids together include copies of their birth certificates and be prepared with originals at the interview.

So our new package contains:

1. A photocopy of both sides of Permanent Resident Card (Green Card).

2. A scanned photocopy of my USC spouse's birth certificate proving that he is a legal American citizen (since we are applying on the basis of marriage).

3. An official scanned "copy" of our marriage certificate.

5. And then the obvious completed N-400 form and payment.

I believe this should be sufficient?   No need for photos of us, correct?  I've looked at the form directions and it didn't mention it, but I want to be sure based on any RFE's people had got.

Thats all they say you actually need. I also included:

Joint Bills

Joint Car Ins

A couple of photos

The last few months of going bank statement

It's really not hard to include them and I just thought it would only strengthen case.

N400 filed based on marriage is very similar to I-751.. Joint IRS tax transcript , house deed, joint bank statement, car insurance/ health insurance with both name on it & life insurance with their spouse as beneficiary, or other docs that you can provide with both name on it plus some pictures should be just fine for the case.

Recently got approved for Citizenship based on marriage to US citizen as well. The only documents that we submitted related to our marriage (apart from a copy of the marriage certificate, of course) were IRS transcripts (filed jointly) and apartment rental leases with both names for the past few years. I did take some additional proofs with me to my interview at Federal Plaza, NY though, but there was no interest by the IO in any of it.

Definitely an overkill, but I respect the ‘too much is better than not enough’ approach here.

Hello,

I am in the middle of filling out the N-400 based on marriage ( three year rule) and I am confused regarding the questions that asks to list the last five years of address history and employment history. Should I list 3 years of info( since I became a permanent resident) or should I list info for the past 5 years (  I have been living in the US for 3 years and half.

thanks for your advice

That's what I did (only 3 years) and it worked for me, but I'm not saying it's the correct way to do it.

For n-400, only your time as a permanent resident is relevant where these employment and address history questions are concerned. Since I also filed under the three year rule, I also included just 3 years of history.
