Because English is the main language spoken here.  Moving to a country, and expecting its natural-born citizens to speak YOUR language is either foolish, disrespectful,  or more likely a combination of both.

Speak as many languages as you can.  I have respect for those who are multilingual.   But at least learn the main language.  It's the proper thing to do.

I completely agree and I am honestly not even sure how this has even become a debate...it's a given. These days it seems common sense isn't even so common anymore...

Let's move to Mexico and demand that they speak English, si man.

Ilhan Omar is the classic example of someone who didn't assimilate and never wanted to.

Wonder if she and her colleague (Tlaib?) will finally convince Jewish voters to see the light as to which party isn't on their side, and actually hasn't been for some time.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I find it difficult to believe she would assimilate, why would anyone expect her to abandon her belief system,.

Four posts to resort to a personal insult? Usually you can do better. If you're having a bad day, you don't need to bring it here.

There is a difference between a personal insult and pointing out what is being said.  I have no reason to insult you.

You may not like CT, but the thread is not about him.  It's about Omar and what she said.

To the others who are focusing on what I said about learning the host nation language (which I stand behind, and always will), the topic is about Omar and her attempt to downplay 9/11, and make herself out to be a victim here in the US, which is utter BS.  If America is so awful, why doesn't she return to Somalia and run for office and make changes there?

As to the side topic of language, when I lived in other countries,  I did my best to learn their language because that is the right (best way) thing to do.  I saw it first hand one day in a store... a fellow American came in and asked the fellow stocking the shelves where to find something in English.  The stocker said he didn't understand in his native tongue. The American tried 3 or 4 more times, getting more frustrated and his voice rising, before he gave up and left the store in frustration.

A few minutes later, unable to find a particular item myself, I walked up to the same store employee and asked in his language (very broken, but I was trying) where I could find "item X".  In perfect English. He replied, "Aisle 5, right side, top shelf."  My jaw must have dropped as I exclaimed, "Your English is nearly perfect!"  He smiled and said,  yes, and your attempt to speak MY language is appreciated.

I will never forget that little life lesson.

More on the side topic, with apologies for the diversion.

When Mrs. T-B. arrived, we began shopping in the local Mexican supermarket, where I stand out as a definite gringo.  Before she taught me some basic Spanish for use there, I could easily see the embarrassment in the employees at the butcher counter who didn't speak English.

She told me to ask "Hablas Inglés?" (do you speak English?).  If the answer was no, I was to say "Yo tampoco" (me neither) and continue in my pidgin Spanish.  If the answer was yes, or "a little," I was to say (brightly, in English) "Me, too!" and continue in either language.  The non-English-speaking employees visibly relaxed when I said "Yo tampoco" and continued as above.  Once, when a butcher did speak English but I ordered in Spanish anyway, he said, "Your Spanish is very good," which of course was flattering to hear.

While visiting a little Mexican border town, I went into their largest pharmacy to look for one of Mrs. T-B.'s numerous hair products.  A female and a male pharmacist approached.  I asked the lady, "Hablas Inglés?"  She looked very embarrassed and said, "No."  I brightly said, "Yo tampoco!" and was beginning my question in Spanish but was drowned out by guffaws from the male pharmacist.  I managed to communicate my need and ended up not buying anything, but I felt good that I didn't have to hurt the lady's feelings and gave the guy a laugh.
