I-129F: leaving blank fields that don't apply?

I have found conflicting information on this and I'm not sure what to do. The instructions on the most recent I-129F from the USCIS website say that if a field doesn't apply, we should write "None" or "N/A" unless otherwise instructed. However, most of the information I can find online says that fields that aren't applicable to me (names of previous spouses, etc.) should just be left blank. Also, I'm filling out the I-129F PDF that I downloaded from the website in Adobe Acrobat, and when I try to type N/A in some fields, it won't allow me to because a "/" is not an allowed character. All of this makes me think it's okay to leave non-applicable fields blank...but that's not what the instructions say. What's the right answer here?

I think it is better to fill in everything that doesn't apply to you with N/A or or None - otherwise, it may appear to an officer reviewing your application that you missed a question and accidentally left it blank.  This way, every field has something filled in.

 

I just typed in what the form let me and then printed out the form and wrote the N/A's in by hand - we were approved without any issues.

Just write N/A and you will be fine. Do not over think things.

I wrote N/A on everything that didnt apply, if it asked for a date , II wrote N/A, If they asked for a date I wrote N/A. Add N/A to everything that doesnt apply.

Good question. Many of the forms, such as the Form I-129F have specific instructions on what to do in those situations:

3. Answer all questions fully and accurately. If a question does not apply to you (for example, if you have never been married and the question asks “Provide the name of your current spouse”), type or print “N/A,” unless otherwise directed. If your answer to a question which requires a numeric response is zero or none (for example, “How many children do you have” or “How many times have you departed the United States”), type or print “None,” unless otherwise directed.

Follow the instructions.   You can always hand enter a value if needed.
