?? I got admitted to ER on a B visit once. I just needed an official ID, a passport is all she needs.

some people have reported being asked for proof of ties to home (job letter etc), I never was asked but I know of others who were.

What kind of questions?

Introduced herself

Was I expecting a visitor

How long she would stay

Purpose of visit

Return flight purchased already ?

Status of me and wife regarding citizenship

Not sure if it was because there was no invite letter, but MIL spoke no English and we provided her a sheet with our phone number to give the officer.  After the questions, she said she was going to let her in, but said it would be easier if we wrote a letter of invitation next time.

In light of my experience, however, my answers to any questions will be quite different if I receive a call in the future, albeit unlikely.

USCIS called me when my MIL arrived at the airport and asked me some questions.  She suggested I write a letter of invitation next time, so I forward this to you.

IMO this all clearly happened because she spoke no English & couldn’t answer questions. Hence the recommendation for an invite letter, simply to pre-emptively answer the routine questions. So maybe a useful example for others whose relatives don’t speak English.
