Thanks all for your responses!

So how is it that UK immigration know you left the country if you enter on the U.K. passport but leave on the US one?

That is is what I did on this trip I completed:

Leave US - US Passport

Enter U.K. - UK passport

Leave U.K. - US passport

Enter US - US passport

I would have used U.K. passport at U.K. exit (do I recall correctly they check passport on exit?) but show it to airline for boarding as that will be used for entry to US. Does that distinction make sense?

most other countries require own passport for both exit and entry, I understand U.K. doesn’t, but it seems to make sense to use it the same way.

The only exit routine that I am aware of for the U.K. is the check-in at the airline counter. And since your round trip ticket was purchased using the US passport, then the airline expects the US passport at departure from the U.K.  There is no UK immigration station to pass through like when you arrive in the U.K.    The Border Force get exit info from the airlines Advance Passenger Information (API). If I entered with my U.K. passport, the Border Force would not be checking on me as a foreigner to make sure I did not overstay my allotted time there. As a UKC, I have no limit for how long I stay.
