School in the UK

Hello,

 I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this but my fiance from the UK dropped out of school when he was 15/16 and started working. He now wants to finish school to be able to help him get a job once he moves to the US  after our visa goes through. Would he be able to get a GED once in the US or is there a way to finish schooling while still in the UK?

I believe he could get a GED, I would imagine doing exams etc in the UK is not practical if you are in the K1 process, not enough time.

A lot of local/community colleges offer these courses. They may just request what transcripts he has from the UK and maybe have him do some "placement" or "evaluation" tests to check where he is at exactly. Shouldn't be a problem though.

It's relatively easy to obtain a GED here. 

 

I had to go and get one, since either a high school pass or a GED was an absolute requirement in a career I'm pursuing, despite the fact that I have higher British qualifications.

On one of the first US job interviews I went on, the interviewer asked about my high school education.  

 

I explained that I graduated from high School in Canada, and then obtained 3 degrees at post-secondary institutions.  Well qualified in the field.  

 

They were not happy I did not have an American GED, even though, a higher education was a requirement of the posting, which in my head renders high school irrelevant.  

 

Needless to say I did not get that job, and I have not obtained an “American high school equivalency”.

 

@Pooley He may as well do it when he is here, incase any employer takes issue with the fact that a UK GED (or whatever it is called there) is not the same

Yes, that is what I figured. It's hard to prove I guess and things are ran a little different in the US. I will just have him start practicing now and get his GED when he gets here. Thank you!!

Community colleges should be able to assist him in obtaining a GED. My husband sees students going through that process all the time.

I did mine at a local community college in North Texas. And then, because I felt like it, I signed up to do some real classes on top of that.
