My husband lives in Algeria. We are trying to obtain an ITIN # to complete my filed 2018 taxes. He tried to mail me his passport but wasn't allowed to. Does anyone from Algeria Know where he can get a CERTIFIED ORIGINAL COPY of his passport. The municipality he received it from said they don't provide that. I'm thinking they don't understand what he needs. And also where to find a Certified Acceptance Agent for a Certificate Of Accuracy in Algeria. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

There are none it appears.  See the IRS website https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/acceptance-agent-program

You should just file as Married Filing Separately and get finished with it for now.

Right!. Unfortunately I already filed joint back in February.😥  We sent the W7 Form  along with a copy of his passport that was notorized. It was rejected because they no longer accept notorized copy's.

You can let the US embassy in Algeria notarize a copy of the passport. The USEM notarized version is 100% accepted by IRS.

I don't the US embassy can certify the authenticity of a foreign passport, can they?  Typically, US notaries can verify a signature, but not a document.

Correct.  This is a different process than a notary

They can. That's how my wife got her passport certified for W-7 application. There's a fee for the service.

"Certified copies. You can submit copies of original documents if you do any of the following. • Have the copies certified by the issuing agency. • Have the officers at U.S. embassies and consulates overseas provide certification and authentication services. Contact the Consular Section, American Citizens Services of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in advance to determine the hours of operation for these services."

It has to be done by the issuing agency of his passport, which is not the US government.

My wife got it done at the US embassy. Very easy. They don't authentic; they simply certify a copy of it which the IRS 100% accepts.

My husband called the Embassy this morning. They told him the Embassy was for Americans. Thanks for the link. I will call them tomorrow and explain in detail. I think there was some miscommunication.

Thank You guys so much!. 😀

Wrong. IRS accepts certified copies from US Embassies. I have done it.
