I-751 Reminder Letter; but my GC expires Oct 2020!

Okay so what happened was my AoS was approved October 2018.

 

They sent me my GC, which had the wrong "resident since" date on it. It said August 2017, which was our filing date.

 

I filed an I-90 and luckily, they approved it very fast. My correct GC came and it expires October 2020.

 

However, I've now received the I-751 reminder letter from them because they're saying my conditional PR card expires August 2019. This is incorrect (obviously). My question is: do I need to do anything?

 

Second question: when will they stop sucking at their jobs?

I wanna say you don’t because they will see the proper expiry, but it’s USCIS so who knows.  I still have a case showing as “received” when it was approved over 2 years ago.

 

Realistically, you should be fine filing at the appropriate time as you will have to submit a copy of the resident card.  I think those reminder notices are auto generated and never updated.  Mine was sent to an address I don’t live at well after I changed my address with them.

Sounds like an error based on the old incorrect card. Was the old card destroyed by USCIS?

Yes it was sent to them with the I-90. I am guessing they destroyed it. I never got that notification though.

 

I'm considering sending a letter with a copy of the reminder letter and my new GC to say the reminder letter was sent in error.

We did an I-90 and did receive a message that the old card was destroyed after mailing it back. I'm leaning towards just ignoring the reminder letter, but then again maybe it makes to double check with USCIS that your old card was indeed marked down as destroyed/no longer in use and didn't get stolen and isn't floating around out there in illegal use by someone? 😧

Ok thanks, I will call them tomorrow. I'm pretty sure it is indeed destroyed because they wouldn't have approved the I-90 if the GC had gotten lost in the process.

I'm guessing their notification system wasn't updated. I wouldn't worry too much about it - your green card is valid until the corrected expiration date.

It won't hurt to call either, but I think this is more of just a technology issue than anything practical. 👍

Off-the-cuff I want to lean towards the "well, the office/people that handle the i-751s is not necessarily the same office/people that handle the i-90s so there could have been some cross-hairs involved (I liken it to when you pay a bill online/over the phone and then a week later receive a statement in the mail asking you to pay the same bill because their system wasn't updated to reflect any changes to your account).

 

(Btw:  The chances of USCIS receiving your old incorrect card is extremely high, considering they wouldn't have produced the new card unless the old one was in their hands.)

 

If any issue was to arrive with the i-751 later on, (I doubt it will) you always have a copy of your i-90 receipt letter to show the original card was sent back in for the issue date to be corrected.

When more of our tax money goes towards funding them instead of it being largely fee-based.

 

On second thought----they'd still suck then, but at least hopefully a bit less.

Yes I figured that the two different forms are handled by different people and they're generally so slow at updating information, even simple address changes. I'll be calling them to make sure.

Get transferred to a L2 officer on the phone instead of dealing with the regular customer service people, would be my advise, when you call.

I received my GC over the weekend with the exact same error as yours!

Ugh!! So sorry but it's technically an easy fix with an I-90. I highly recommend emailing your senator after you file the I-90. I'm pretty sure that's why mine got approved so fast.

Ignore the letter. It's clearly based on an error that was already corrected.

Update in case anyone's curious:

 

Called USCIS and the level 1 lady immediately said she would escalate to level 2 for me. So that was nice. I didn't have to fight her to talk to level 2, which I've had to do in the past...

 

Anyway the level 2 lady confirmed what was already explained in this thread. She did also confirm that the old card was marked as "destroyed" and that the new card shows up when she looks me up in the system. So she told me to ignore it. So I guess I will lol!
