I'm sure he does as that's when Paris is hosting the  summer Olympics. Maybe he could take back some of that money he pledged for the climate accord scam and use it to rebuild Notre Dame.

I figured there was an ulterior motive. You can't rebuilt a cathedral that took hundreds of years to construct in 5 years, lol...its not just about having technology or money to make it go faster, it's about creating something from the heart and with love. The experts and historians are saying decades at least, that is, if we want it back to it's original splendor...which we do! Macron is just lapping up this tiny moment of unity in his rocky career...he better enjoy it while it lasts...because it won't, he doesn't deserve to bask in the unity that was created out of mourning the destruction of art.

 

I'm happy to hear that sales of Notre Dame de Paris have made it to the best seller list again in France! Victor Hugo would be proud to see that his rallying cry to restore the cathedral so many years ago still rings true today.

There was a historical architect on French tv this morning talking about the difficulty and complexity of Gothic architecture. That along with finding craftsmen with the knowledge and the sourcing of materials for restoration will be extremely difficult. I read the original roof structure or "charpente"  in French took 52 acres of old growth hardwood forest to build. I can't imagine the environmentalists will be happy with that.

 

Macron is probably happy this is distracting from the gilets jaunes.

The cathedral was restored in the 19th century by genius architect and restorationist Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. It will be so difficult to find someone on his level again to step in, it will take a monumental effort of time and skill. Gothic architecture is the most complex of all, hardly anyone around is properly schooled in how to build it anymore...but there are plenty of people in the woodworks who absolutely love this style of architecture and for them it it would be a dream to actually contribute to building it. 

 

Perhaps there's a way they can add some modern safety or technological elements to the roof without compromising the design or style. Well, if trees have to be scarified for it...so be it.

Don't report me guys, I know English only outside the regional forums...maybe @theresaL can translated if needed,  but basically the parts in red text were destroyed. The spire is probably the easiest part to rebuild (it was 19th century), the interior of the roof structure was the medieval marvel that will be much harder to rebuild...it had been there since the 1200's! (sorry I don't have accent marks set on my computer and some of this is word-for-word) Hope this helps as I'm not a very good translator.

 

Transept=two side parts of a cross-shaped church.

arrow=spire

tours=tower

nord-north

ouest=west

toiture=roof

charpente=frame

 

"La voute en pierre a ete percee"=the stone vault ceiling was pierced. Three holes in the ceiling have been identified and weaknesses at the gable level of the north transept. The 16 large copper statues which ornamented the roof were removed by helicopter on Thursday. (ND has a vaulted ceiling inside the chapel. (You can see this in photos where there are now large sections/holes)

 

"La toiture et la charpente detruites"= the roof and frame destroyed. The 2 layer roof was ravaged by the flames. The loft of the choir (end of the 12 century) and that of the nave (13 century) were among the most beautiful and oldest in France. The date of the transept from the 14th century.

 

"La fleche, le coq et ses reliques"= the arrow, the rooster and it's relics. Ending at 96 meters in the sky of Paris, the arrow (19th century) of Notre Dame did not resist the flames. It's reconstruction should however not be a problem.

In my opinion, if someone wanted to bring a building like this down, the location of the fire was in the right place. I don't know anything about engineering, but it seems to me the junction of crossing points would be vulnerable. Maybe an engineer or architect on VJ could weigh in.

I totally agree. The fire burned in the once place where it was sure it wreak havoc, the wooden part which essentially became a huge lit match from the top down. I'm not an engineer or an architect, but I have a Masters in Art History. This kind of architecture relies a lot on physics and the placement of certain keystones, all working against gravity to make sure it stands. The points where the vaulted arches (rib vaults) meet are the keystones, they maintain the overall structure of the arch.This is probably why a few of the rib vaults caved in, 😭but the majority of the vaulted ceiling arches survived, but I would question their stability at this point....it could be compromised by water damage or fire damage.

 

The firefighters had to be careful not to blast too hard at the keystones or other key points in the stonework, as the pressure could've caused it to collapse. Something a bit like this:

 

 

Considering the insanely difficult task at hand, the firefighters did a wonderful job putting out the fire...I cannot a more difficult or intricate building in which to battle a fire in. The walls of the building are supported from the sides and flying buttresses, so it appears the structure is sound from all sides for now, but the rib vaulted roof (under the wooden roof frame, sadly now gone) could be destabilized in more places...the restorers will probably have to spend months just assessing which elements are stable and which aren't, which will need repairs or reinforcements...since otherwise the whole ceiling or parts of it may just crash down on those below. I'm guess the interior of the church will be closed for a long time coming to ensure the safety of visitors. Some of the side chapels and side aisles could probably be opened up sooner, but the main aisle (nave) will probably take the longest to assess for safety. The nave is where the church services are held, so that's the sad part about it, it won't be a functional church again for years most likely.

 

That's my assessment just based on what I know about such structures...I'm assuming more and more info will come out once they clear the debris.
