The system was overwhelmed so there tried to cut out the supply, long wait times means that only those with a serious issue is likely to go through with it.

I understand,  but in my situation, I am a freelancer and don't have one constant employer, so this means I can't work at all until they send me the new work permit and there is no way for me to actually get  an expedite on it? It's just crazy. Please tell me I am missing something and there is a way for me to push it forward somehow. Thank you.

I figured as much, that it was to 1) discourage people from scheduling them at all and 2) seeing if Tier 2 could help/answer questions before the appointment needed to be scheduled.

But it sounds like they didn't update the need for more Tier 2 officers to match the increase in demand. Also, for people who actually do need appointments, it's now a 2hr process of waiting on hold/talking to someone to convince them of the need to schedule an appointment and then going to that appointment. It's a lot of hassle.

Well, if there is no other way to do it, I'd rather wait for 2 hours than 2 more months while all the jobs I could have done are passing me by. That is, if I get some kind of clarity and speed up the whole process...

since you havent received your renewal and it has been over 6 months in my understanding I dont think you can continue to work unfortunately.

Not necessarily. The renewal's NOA1 extends the EAD's printed expiration by 180 days:

then this Notice of Action automatically extends the validity of your EAD for up to 180 days fro the expiration date printed on the face of the card. If all of the above conditions apply with respect to your EAD renewal application, you may present this Notice of Action with your expired EAD to your employer for employment eligibility verification (Form I-9) purposes.

Hello,

Yes, as far as I understand, the renewal notice extends the card's expiration date by 180 days, meaning that if my card expired on September 17, 2018, then my official last day of work would be March 17, 2019. If that is what you mean, then sadly I know it and my extension has already expired, and that is why I asked the question. I thought that even though the extension has already expired, I can still work because I still haven't received my card. Or do you mean something else, that I'm missing? Thank you.

It has been more than 6 months AFTER her expired EAD and she has not received the new one. So she can no longer work until she receives a new one. If you can @Miss_JK call USCIS now since it is still early to ask if you can still work even though the extension expired and have peace of mind. Ask to Talk to a tier 2 though, customer service are pretty useless, they repeat whatever you can read yourself online

if my card expired on September 17, 2018

My work permit has naturally expired together with the extension and my timely filed renewal application has not been denied. I filed for it on July 27 2018.

Since USCIS is taking their sweet time with C9 EAD renewals, the warning that follows is for all AOS applicants:

File for the EAD renewal 6 months, for good measure, before the printed expiration date.

Well, yes, I am aware I should have filed for the renewal much earlier than July 27th.  I naively assumed my GC application would have been already approved. For now the status says 'We've reviewed your fingerprints', and it was on August 5th, 2018, so I guess I will get my new card somewhere around September this year....Thank you for the clarification!

I guess I could try and confirm what's what, especially since the promised letter with the instructions never came. Thank you for the tip!

Alright! I finally got my work permit, after having called them 3 times and 2 weeks of waiting after that. When talking to the operator I did emphasize on a new job offer and a possibility of losing it. It could also be because my case is out of normal time limits, but the last time I called they told me it actually was not since it hasn't been 25,5 months yet. When I asked to talk to the tier 2 officer they refused. Oh well, we'll see what happens next...Just in case, the time line for the permit processing is attached. Thank you guys for participating and good luck to us all with everything! Will keep you posted 😁🤞
