Spouses married less than 2 years at the time of US entry DO have to go through the ROC process.  If you were married more than 2 years at the time you entered the US, then that’s why this isn’t applicable to you, but certainly doesn’t exclude everyone with a spousal visa.

Hello all.

We are gathering, copying, and printing all of our needed documents, and I have a question regarding bank statements. In several different threads I have seen people who included a bank statement from each quarter, and some who said they sent all of them. I also had seen someone who said they had heard of an RFE being issued requesting all bank statements, but some of these threads were also several years old so I'm not sure if they are still relevant. I would have 2 1/2 to 3 years of joint statements since we were married, at what looks like an average of 5 pages per month, so maybe over 150 pages just for that. Is there any consensus on what is required or best practice? I can err on the side of caution and print them all, but don't really know if it's deemed as necessary. We also have utilities, which I was planning on one per quarter, our lease, and insurance documents.

Any thoughts on this are really appreciated.

Thanks!!

I sent all of our bank statements. I just always err on the side of caution and tend to probably over send evidence. I just didn't want to risk getting an RFE.

I sent a copy of every bank statement since we were married. It's a good thing I did because I read later that one of the things they look for is both parties using the account by comparing debit card numbers. We typically use my debit card and rarely spouse's because he likes for his card to look new. (lol, yeah it's a quirk of his) Fortunately there are transactions with his card number but they might not have been included if I had only sent quarterly copies. I did not send any photos, but did included copies of airline mileage accounts showing trips completed that we had taken together.

Hmm... I have read this before.  Neither our bank or credit cards delineate the statement by user.  It’s just a laundry list of transactions.

Our bank includes the last four numbers of the debit card associated with the transaction. I had never noticed this so I checked to be sure and yep, there they were.

Same here, none of our bank statements who which user did what. It's just a big list of transactions, impossible to tell who did what transaction.

I included a couple flight ticket receipts as well. Also, my husband and I literally do not have any other bank accounts except the ones we submitted (our 2 joint accounts) so I'm hoping it'll be fine. Not too worried about it...would honestly be shocked if we got an RFE for the statements not showing individual card numbers per transaction but...who knows.

in my case I just send one latest bank statement of joint saving account it was printer from the bank, and other evidences, I didn't get RFE, and I did the same in my N-400 application

IMHO, it's just ridiculous to send in all bank statements for 3+ years. There is simply no added evidentiary value in doing so, and it shows a misunderstanding of the rationale for sending them at all.

Remember: What petitioners need to demonstrate for ROC is that a marriage was legit from the beginning to the present, as shown, in the totality of the circumstances, by shared habitation, financial practices, ownership, life experiences, planning for the future, etc. That means three main things for bank statements:

First, they'll be considered in light of other evidence. If you can't show through other ways that you live together, own stuff jointly, travel together, have kids together, or are planning for retirement together ("married people stuff"), sending all your bank statements from age 5 (Trump's dad was paying him a $200k salary from age 2!) won't matter.

Second, the statements need to show sharing of financial arrangements. Isn't that the main point of ROCs? So it'd be great if 1) the accounts were jointly owned, and 2) the statements have regular-life transactions (payments of rent, utilities, school fees, credit card bills, etc.). Again, "married people stuff". So pick statements that have detailed transactions.

Third, you want to show that your shared finances span from marriage to the present. Considering the above, one carefully selected statement with lots of transactions per quarter should be fine. Then focus on other evidence!

We are erring on the side of caution and sending all bank statements, around 225-250 pages. Ours do show the last four digits of the debit cards which is probably a great thing, though I think I need to talk to my wife about here apparent Amazon addiction...

One other question I have is regarding the cover letter. For the I-129 and AOS, I had a one page cover with bullet points for content. I am wondering if I should include anything else either in the cover letter or separately that explains anything about the finances? Such as pointing out that the copies of debit cards can be associated with entries on the statements, or noting when my wife started working and receiving direct deposit? Some of those financial connections. Or should I assume that they connect all the dots themselves? From W2s they can associate the employment with the deposits, and the employment with the insurance and such, just wondering if I should explain a bit and at least point them in the right direction.

Thanks again to all who have replied here, this is all very helpful!
