No, but everybody goes through AP. So Boiler was correct.

 

The DS5535 is NOT AP. They are two separate things. That is why when you said you are not talking about “that AP” it made no sense.

There does tend to be items that are in common among people that get a DS-5535. Country of origin, work/education experience, residency and travel histories, etc. do tend to be factors. But there is no way to know exactly what triggers it in any individual case. One STEM-field professional or engineer from Egypt might not get it and another may. One may be male and not the other.

I've seen men and women from Canada, Australia, the UK, Philippines, etc. get the DS-5535. So it's certainly not limited to only certain countries, a particular travel history, a specific gender, etc.

Reasons (although a bit of randomness cannot be ruled out). But it's speculation on what those reasons are for any specific individual.

One example is what if you went to school with or worked alongside somebody who is suspected of having links to terror groups? You would never know, but extra background checks wouldn't be "random" either.

Some T Countries are both, maybe all? Not sure. The Travel Ban ones are those for their own specific reasons, for example Venezuela would be high fraud but not currently an obvious source of Terrorism.

Correct, they are not impacted by the travel ban. But residents do tend to get the DS-5535 at an increased rate as well (I would add Egypt to the list personally as well from what I've seen reported).

With Pakistan in particular, the PCCs are not deemed to be trustworthy by the DOS, so extended background checks tend to be common already.

Pakistan is probably the most cited country here on VJ in terms of receiving the DS 5535.  There are numerous lengthy threads about this, on both the South Asia regional board and the US Embassy/Consulate board.  Do some reading here and you will see.

It changes which is why I prefer not be that specific, for example Morocco seems to be more an issue than it was a few years ago, but anybody aware of their own Country specific issues would know.
