Melbourne police certificate for K1

I’ve never broken the law, but I’m planning on getting a fingerprint and name check just to cover all bases.

I don’t really understand how to go about this. I’ve been on the AFP website for the national police certificate and also the Victoria police website, which has a page on information for its national police record checks. Can I have my prints taken at the Victoria Police Fingerprint Facility? And I’m guessing they need to be ink prints? Will 1 set be sufficient?

How would I go about using fingerprints with an online application? I’m planning on calling the AFP on Monday but I’m just really confused about what to do.

Any help would be really appreciated!

You really don't need the fingerprint check. My fiance did the name check only, and it was fine. The only cautiou is that if you only do the name check, be sure to include all names you've ever used. You would have to go in person to do fingerprints, and I'm pretty sure they do it electronically, which means no ink. Make sure you get a federal police check, and it should say "complete disclosure, all recordable offenses released". My fiance's interview was this past Monday, and there was no problem with it. Best of luck with yours!

Thanks so much! I may just do the name check since the fingerprint one isn’t necessary. Did your fiancé go with code 33  on their application then? Which I believe is “full disclosure”? And did he/she go on the AFP “online application” page?

He did go with code 33, sorry I forgot to mention that. I don't know about the AFP online application page, but that sounds right. I'll be chatting with him in a couple of hours and I'll ask him.

If you decide to go with the fingerprints. Though I agree not necessary .. we chose to have prints just to cover all bases..

yes the VicPol fingerprint facility .. it was on Flinders St in the World Trade Centre when I went ... one set is enough.. it was ink when we did it .... the instructions on the AFP website are clear in what you need to do    Search AFP National police clearances ... look at the section Fingerprint check

I contacted the embassy in Sydney (for a CR-1) and they said if you've had a different name at any time it's probably safer to get fingerprints, which I did.

I hope I joined the right club. I am the USC. I can't leave this to my fiance (from Straya) as he would make a mess out of the process despite being a lawyer. May I please ask when in the process would you need to do the police report? Isn't it after you have gotten married? Please educate me.

Thank you,

Thank you,

Hi there! The police report is taken to the interview, so it should be done prior to that. 😊

Good lord. I am so glad I joined. Thank you!

So my specific case is, my fiance lives overseas (not Australia) at the moment. We filed but indicated that we would like for the case to be sent to Melbourne (I think it's sensible) for processing. Given now that I learned of the police report/ finger prints requirement, I think it makes perfect sense for him to return home to take care of this.

Anyone out there in or has gone though the same process (Aussie living abroad in a 3rd country, processing through either Melbourne or Sydney)?

Hmm, it may be helpful to create your own forum topic so more users can answer your specific questions. But as far as living abroad goes, I know that any Australian beneficiary over 16 needs an Australian police certificate along with one from every country they’ve resided in for longer than 6 (I think) months. Also, I live in Melbourne, but selected Sydney in my I-129F and other application documents because the Sydney consulate is the only one that processes K-1 fiancé visas.

Thank you. Another bit of information I didn't know... very helpful
