well, if you have no red flags or criminal records, so hiring an attorney is wasting $$$ and time. They are F..... suck u dry, and then when u call them, they get irritated as you are not paying any for them. I believe, hiring a lawyer it makes worse because it makes the officer gets wonder, why did this applicant hire an attorney? However, if I am in ur shoes, i just will cancel him, and enough what he or she got. And continue the journey by yourself.

good luck,

Firstly it depends on the lawyer. Make sure it's a good lawyer. Secondly insist to the lawyer you proof read everything before he sends it off. My husband and i have been utilizing the same lawyer since we started with the k1 fiance visa. We are now at the N400 stage. Things have gone smoothly until now when we got a RFE post interview. I'm glad we have a lawyer now to advise us. And someone who can submit a writ of mandamus if uscis takes too long to adjudicate our N400 RFE response. Someone who can help us in court if the N400 is denied.

Getting a lawyer is like purchasing insurance for your immigration paperwork. I'm personally glad we hired a lawyer now since we've hit a bump in the road.

You can have a clean easy case and still run into problems.

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people who come to this site complaining of incompetence on the part of their attorneys. Why do they represent themselves as immigration lawyers when they don't have even basis knowledge of the process?

If I were you I'd fire your attorney and do it all on your own with the help of people on this site. Even if you lose money it's worth having peace of mind knowing things will be done correctly and in your own time.

If you decide to go that route, make sure you get back all of your original documents from the attorney.

My husband I I did the entire process from sending the original petition and up to and including naturalization on our own. We had several red flags and we never had any RFEs. You can do it, too!

Since you do not know anything about this "you's" abilities, aptitudes, diligence, or attitude, YOU do not KNOW whether they can do it themselves or not.  Maybe they can.  Only THEY "know".

You can also get a lawyer and have problems. Tons of story on here about that.

I take it your point is that generalizing is "unproductive"?  If so, I agree. wholeheartedly.

I guess I will add my 2 cents in here. I knew I was going to apply for a visa for non-immigrant at some point. So I asked my lawyer who also handled my divorce 5 years ago, if he did visas. He told me that he didn't but that if I was diligent in my application, I should not have any problems. He knows others that do this process and it is a matter giving exactly what the USCIS and State Department want. He told me if there were any questions that I didn't understand from a 'legal standpoint', send him an email and he would advise me how to proceed. He didn't charge me anything for said advice and he was correct, (in as so far), with regards to the USCIS. I will put this disclaimer here though, we both are members of the same 'fraternal organization'. In the end, you as the sponsor are responsible for the content on the application. Albeit for a K-1 or a CR-1.

I regret it. I have basically done all the follow up myself. I have had to call and request status because my wife's case was taking a long time. I did this multiple times because she would only say that the USCIS is backlogged and not call. Our case took over 1 year to get approved (i130/I am a US citizen, no pardon required)

Our i130 got approved on 01/30/2019. I called the NVC at the end of March and they said they had not received it. I didn't even bother calling my lawyer. I called USCIS and recently got a letter that that they are sending the case to t NVC within 2 weeks.

Now I'm wondering if I should even bother letting her know once the welcome letter from NVC gets here. Cause it seems I'm the one giving her the updates on our case instead of her. Plus wondering if she's going to charge me for this second part of the process.
