DS-156 Electronic Version or Paper?

It wasnt mentioned in my packet 3 at all, but I read on the Embassy info page for London that you can fill out an electronic version of DS-156 which generates a barcode and is supposed to speed up the processing of the form at the embassy.

Can someone please clarify this for me. Should I use this electronic form even though my packet 3 mentions nothing of it....?

What is the point in that official page, when they dont tell you about it? I find these 2 points from the website particularly scary:

•The visa application form DS-156 must be filled out on-line.

•Failure to complete the 2D bar coded form will delay your application for a visa.

Have i totally missed something here or what? Is everyone else filling that form out online? I was about to send off the regular paper one they sent me.

When my fiancee went through London last year, they required that she fill out the electronic version and submit it with the barcode.

When they say that your application could be delayed if you don't use the electronic version, that is because, without the barcode, someoine at the embassy has to type in your details. The barcode saves them a lot of time.

ok I will fill out the electronic version. Is that the ONLY electronic form that needs to be completed in packet 3??

For generating such a barcode, yes it is.

Keep in mind that you can download the other forms and, in many cases, complete them on your computer and then print the result. You can't often save the end-result, but at least the printed form looks tidier.

I've done the DS156 online and used the pdf files for all the other documents. If you don't have enough space attach a sheet of paper with any additional info you want to add. Just makes life much easier for the person processing the forms when they are typed. I wouldn't want to be the person who tries to decipher anything i've written, most days I can't even read it myself! LOL

I sent my packet 3 on January 10. Had confirmation of an interview on Feb 2.

Didnt fill in DS-156 online. Doesnt look like it delayed my case too much....
