The crime is real. Deportation is the punishment. Illegals need to be aggressively captured and the employers and abettors prosecuted.  Read the penal code.

Can't agree with you enough. It may be 'only' a misdemeanor (for some, not all -- some entries are felonies, I understand), but it is nevertheless still a crime. We are fortunate to have a legal system which is still functional (barely) but which relies on the Anglo-American value of the rule of law. To ignore that is to confuse 'morality' with 'legality.' Are there moral cases for some persons to stay here despite flouting our laws? Perhaps; I have some friends who would agree with that, though I strongly disagree with their positions. But the legality -- or rather, illegality -- of it should not be in dispute by any reasonable person.

Watching the Debates over the past 2 days the plan is to make it a ticketable offence, like speeding or parking.

Braver man than I to watch that drivel. Bunch of preening fools.

I looked into the list of federal misdemeanors out of the simple curiosity of a relatively new citizen. Some of these crimes are hardly what I'd call ticketable offences, like bribery of public officials or voter intimidation. I doubt the Democrats would want to turn that into something that could be cured by the simple payment of a fine. What utter hypocrisy.

What would be the point, no address, no ID?

I think what we're seeing is confusion over the organization of society around Western Anglo-Saxon, Judeo-Christian juris prudence which we've had for 1000 years and which is causing confusion among native South American types, Africans and some Asians (the Chinese get it).  This system is what allowed our culture to dominate the world and generate all modern technology and development .. and I do mean ALL.  No other cultures have contributed anything except insofar as they have adopted our system.  So confusing for people.  But if they like it their way, they should just stay the hell out. We are a nation of laws.
