A couple of years back this would not of happened, anyway back to subject, I seem to remember a couple who did not have a sponsor and they said the US Embassy had told them that approximately £8000 or in that region was the amount needed to self sponsor. I have been looking at the US Embassy web site and I can not find what I am looking for but it was done. Maybe by putting self sponsor in the search box that might bring up a couple of posts.

As for this forum .... YES it has been helpful and as I've said there are a lot of nice people in this world but a few are spoiling it for the rest and that is why people are moving away from VJ. Richi it might make sense to go to the Family Based Immigration web site. Wenchie is there she may be able to point you in the right direction.

I'm just a lil curious because being that I am self-employed, I have to show 3 yrs tax returns, which I don't have cos for 4 years I didn't work. I only started working again in the middle of last year..so this concerns me as it related to the Affadavit of Support.

I've heard about people self-sponsoring thru London, and I'm just curious if anyone here has done it?

i am not sure if jenart did that as her daughter had only been self employed for a short while, why not drop London and email and check if it can be done for you.

I know someone who JUST interviewed around May/June had a bit of a tricky time with his sponsors so he ended up sponsoring himself (I'm trying to remember his review...something about they were saying his fiancee had children she actually didn't...)

Paul was prepared to self-sponsor if we ran into any trouble but I was accepted just fine. I've heard the amount really varies, anywhere from something like 1,000GBP to 5,000...hopefully someone will have a concrete answer for you.

I self-sponsored. I emiled the embassy with list of my assets and asked them if it would be enough. They said yes and I printed out that reply to take with me at the interview. They just took photocopies of evidence I brought and that was that.

Unfortunately, you can't do it when it comes to AOS though.

Last I heard it was c 3,500 quid.

thats awesome janet, thank you so much. so am i right in saying that going by the end of this conversation, that the amount 'could be' around £3500 to self sponsor?

so, we have our next batch of papers as we're now at the NVC, so my wife could say that the intention would be to sponsor me, as it is at the minute, but things could drastically change. if it does, once at the embassy, i could take evidence showing i have x amount and i'd prefer to self sponsor... i'll give the embassy a call tomorrow too.

hi there, ive asked this a few times, but only had some constructive help from one or 2 decent members, mods havent been as helpful as id hoped.

my question is - can you self sponsor when going thru the CR1 process? as our situation could change very soon. my wife is my sponsor. i dont have a co sponsor, no assets but could raise funds to sponsor myself.

can it be done at all?

Yes.

Applicants Own Funds

An applicant who expects to be able to meet the public charge provisions of the law through personal financial resources may submit to the consular officer evidence of funds or income from one or more of the following sources:

• bank statement showing present balance of applicant's account, date account was opened, the number and amount of deposits and withdrawals during the past 12 months, and the average balance during the year. If there have been recent unusually large deposits, an explanation thereof should be given;
  
• proof of ownership of property or real estate, in the form of a title deed or the equivalent and a letter from a lawyer, or real estate agent showing its present valuation (any mortgages or loans against the property must be stated);
  
• letter or letters verifying ownership of stocks and bonds, with present market value or expected earnings indicated;
  
• statement from insurance company showing policies held and present case surrender value;
  
• proof of income from business investments or other sources.
  

If the financial resources are derived from a source outside the United States, a statement as to how the funds or income are to be transferred to the U.S. must be provided.

Employment

An applicant relying on an offer of prearranged employment to meet the public charge provisions of the law should have the prospective employer submit a notarized letter of employment on the letter head stationary of the employing business. The letter should:

• contain a definite offer of employment;
  
• give a description of the job offered to the alien and an explanation of skills which qualify the alien for the position;
  
• state the rate of compensation to be paid and if pertinent, additional information detailing other benefits to be included in lieu of cash payment;
  
• specify the location, type and duration (whether seasonal, temporary or indefinite) of the employment offered; and
  
• state whether the employment will be immediately available upon the applicant's arrival in the U.S.

By what was said yes, I would also ring or email the embasssy to see what there take is on self sponsoring.

Please post here again when you've had a response from the embassy. That is extremely different from what I've ever read/heard before. Even if you were allowed to use your own UK income, 3,500 GBP is still under the US poverty guideline, so I don't see how that's enough money. All I've ever heard/read no matter what country the foreign spouse is from is that the sponsor or co-sponsor must meet the 125% poverty guidelines for the household size. If that income isn't enough, then assests can be used, but the assests must equal three times the 125% poverty guideline for the house. 3,500 GBP or roughly $7000 is a very small amount of money in these terms.

Also, no matter who is providing the income/money, the USC is always the main sponsor in this situation and needs to fill out the I-864 as the "sponsor".

EDIT - I'm sorry if that sounds cranky. VJ is being really annoying right now - taking forever to load for me and scrolling really weirdly.

SECOND EDIT - I forgot to say that the foreign spouse's income counts if it will continue when the move to the states is made.

Awesome indeed. And not applicable. You are applying for an immigrant visa, not a K visa. An immigrant must be sponsored, there is no "self-sponsoring" (a misleading term anyway - the correct description is 'no sponsor required').

As your wife's spouse you are her Household Member, and your income and assets can be included with her own on her I-864. Except that your current income is not applicable unless it will continue after you enter the USA.

That link is not relevant to your situation. That information is for those applying for non-immigrant visas.

EDIT - I see how it's misleading due to the section heading, but it states that it's related to "fiancé(e), Kii or V visa"s, which are all non-immigrant visas and do not require the I-864.

What l i asked for is can you self sponsor (financially) IF

A - situations change prior to CR1 being granted at embassy level and are unable to get a US sponsor that matches the poverty guidelines

B - if you cannot get a co-sponsor within the US.

I'll check with the embassy to get the answer. I suspect the answer is not, now. But, will get it clarified tomorrow.

It's a "black or white question" for an immigrant visa applicant, it's not 'black or white' for a non-immigrant visa applicant. And the answer - black, white, or grey - is different for the two visa types. So it's essential to know what visa it is that you're applying for if you want to get an applicable answer.
