Medical Question

We were reading through some of the other posts about the medical, and there's a question we are curious about, it has to deal with the vaccinations required for AOS.

When she attends her medical if she needs some vaccinations to have all her required vaccinations for AOS once in America, are those vaccinations she gets during her medical included in the cost of the medical?  Or will each vaccination cost extra on top of the medical cost?

They are on top of the cost of the medical. I got mine at the GP practice for no charge. She might want to ask there.

She only needs MMR, Tdap (and flu vaccine if she will be emigrating during flu season). Varicella is not routinely available in the UK so UK applicants do not need to get this one.

She isn't on the NHS anymore so she said she will have to pay for them, we were using this list to figure out all the vaccines she will need:

On the day of the medical examination, the physician will be required to verify that you have met the vaccination requirement, or that it is medically inappropriate for the you to receive one or more of the following vaccinations: Hepatitis A; Hepatitis B; Influenza, Influenza Type B (HIB); Meningococcal, Mumps; Measles; Pertussis; Pneumococcal; Polio, Rubella Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoids; Varicella.

She won't need all of those for AOS?

She’s still a UK resident though? The NHS is residency based and he who is resident in the UK (working or not working, taxpayer or not) is eligible for the NHS until they no longer are a UK resident.

Is this for the medical in London or the AOS medical?

The key word in the text about vaccines is “age-appropriate”. Some vaccines are only required for children or babies, some only for the elderly. For people 18-60 (from your picture it looks like your fiancé falls into that category) it’s just the ones I mentioned.

If you are following CDC recommendations (I am soon to be a practicing physician assistant next month), some of those would be recommended in anyone who has not received them.  We recommend, for example, that everyone gets Hep B series regardless of age.  They may not enforce HepB series for example, but there are others they will require and it gets costly at the medical if you only get vaccines there.  I have posted the the CDC adult vaccine catch-up schedule link below for your reference. Good luck and hopefully she can get vaccines at somewhere other than the medical for the visa!

ohhhh it all makes sense now because of the age appropriate category, me and her just went through the chart, she's had Tdap, and MMR so she will just need the most current flu shot

Thanks for the help, was a little confused on this :)

If she is still a UK citizen the shots are free. I needed 1 x MMR vaccine as for some reason I only had one as a kid and not two.  I was not eligible for the free flu shot so I had it done in Boots for about £15.

It is well worth making sure you have all your jabs for the K1 medical in the UK onnthr NHS as it will save you an absolute fortune when you do the AOS

Good luck.

yeah, if Tdap (in past 10 years) and MMR are done youre pretty much covered. Has she had chickenpox before ? that will waive her need for Varicella vaccination.

can you confirm this "UK applicants do not need to get this one." for Varicella when it comes to AOS ?

For AOS surely they want this done (or a verbal confirmation of chickenpox in the past during the medical) whether the UK drs thinks its worthwhile or not ?

I was referring to the medical in London. It’s definiteky not needed for that.

For AOS? Couldn’t tell you as I didn’t go through that circus. I came here on an IR-1.

If you get signed off by the panel physician at your visa medical as complete for all things needed or with waivers, then you are theoretically done for AOS. If you skip any, then you have to get signed off in the States for AOS. Example, you didn't have your Tdap...then not complete for sign off.

An adult sheet:

MMR- will have dates of shots

Tdap or Td- will have dates and latest must be within 10 yrs

Varicella- will be ticked "Varicella History" (waiver)

Flu- Marked F for Not flu season (waiver)

All the rest- Marked A for Not Age appropriate (waiver)

The "not routinely available" waiver works for IR1/CR1 immigrant visas because they have to be done before visa interview and can't easily get a shot in the UK.

For a K1, they could get a Varicella shot after arrival in the US. A K1 needs "Varicella History" ticked to show they had chickenpox and the shot is not necessary.
