I also had the gmail issue.

I have seen this situation a few times, and obviously it is common enough for some Consulates to put specific warnings on their web sites. There is a local term for this which I forget, well in the MENA region.

I would not be so sure just because she was going to pay for the ticket, another red flag, that he could not find the money if he was able to get a visa. Relatively small loan compared to what many would pay.

I'm sure this girl is one of his cousins. Although Jordan is a pretty progressive country and many families are trying to get away from marrying within the family, it's still not uncommon for people to marry first and second cousins, especially in the villages. Not just Muslims, but Christians, also.  When I met my husband I was not aware that this is common in Middle Eastern culture. Even though it's very shocking for people in the West and frowned upon, it's normal there. Way back when, people married within the family to protect their wealth. The instances are much lower in Jordan than other countries, but it happens. A few people in my husband's extended family married cousins and I'm glad he warned me ahead of time because I would have been floored if I found out on my own. It's still such a strange concept to me because I cannot even imagine marrying a blood relative.

Keep us updated and tell her not to tell a soul in Jordan that she knows. I'm not convinced his family knows, but don't take a chance in telling them or anyone else until his visa has been cancelled and she has proof from the consulate.

Not only that, I can guarantee his family would pool their money together to buy him a plane ticket.

She's not his relative although you are right. Alot of them still do marry their cousins. Her fiance met this woman when they were both at the University. She was his college sweetheart. She doesn't speak arabic so after she tells him he's been cancelled in every way possible, I will speak to his parents on her behalf since I do speak arabic. I have many questions for them!!

Oh, I thought you said in the original post she was a family member. I must have misread. I apologize.

I really hope she gets this all straightened out. Now that he's sold his car that means he has money to buy a plane ticket on his own. I hope he doesn't find out what's going on ahead of time.

Whenever I've dealt with the consulate in Amman they've been very good about responding to email in a timely way.

Wow!  USCIS and embassy websites have warnings against just this type of marriage fraud, so hopefully they will take action quickly.  She was clever to figure it all out on her own!

Dodged a bullet. Keep us updated and best wishes and hugs to her.
