I did a quick google search on this question and there is no law I could find that required a SSN in order to lease, but no obvious options either. You could try to try locating the tenancy group in TN.. a voluntary group that most landlords management groups are part of... and see if there are any suggestions from them

Yes, I found that office today but they were closed. I'm going to call back tomorrow. Thanks for doing the search.

You can print his i-94 from cbp page and take his passport and birthcertificate and go to get his social security number, i did that when i arrived on my k1 visa, before i get married

This is the best. You can go to the Social Security office and apply in person, it's pretty quick. good luck.

Only works while the I94 has 2 weeks or more before it expires

I checked out getting an ITIN, but I thought that he was ineligible because he is eligible for a SSN. Did I misunderstand what I read?

Have you offered an additional co-signer or a larger cash deposit to allow your husband to be a "guest" for a few months until he can be checked?

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Anyone can get an ITIN, it is intended for people who are not eligible for SSN but want to be considered a US resident for tax purposes.

In fact you don't even have to file taxes, you can simply request one.

If I have to take a guess, the landlord was worried about rent being not paid on time and slipped up on the reasoning even before they could do a BC.

IMO that was a big slipup on the office's part.

You can find resources here, if you can find some text for TN renters protection for your situation, all you need to do is mention it and say you will report this and to the state AG and it is very likely you could end up paying cheap rent in exchange for NDA as this is serious business and the government takes it very serious partly because its their job and partly cause the fines fund the state's budget.

@Meryem467 My husband and I were in the same situation - no one wanted to even touch our application with me being unemployed (while waiting for EAD).  We ended up having to take a place that was less than desirable on a month to month basis (private landlord vs mgmt company) and then once I had a year of working and some credit history established, we were able to get in at the complex we originally wanted.

Great advice........This is exactly what I was going to suggest, too......and hopefully, it would be just a few months.

Sounds like another disadvantage of the K-1 unfortunately, the new arrival can't work for 6 months while waiting for EAD, so even if they did a background check when they get the SSN, it is not going to show any credit history and he has no current income, so they won't approve him as a tenant most likely until he has been working for a while.  Your best bet is to find a landlord who is willing to rent to you and you alone, since you are the one financially responsible for him anyway, or your co-sponsor as a co-signer on the lease if your income is insufficient, and get a lease without your fiance/husband since he won't have income for a long time.  Most landlords will add someone as an occupant of a property who has no income, think of all the stay-at-home moms and dads out there.  Where are you living now?  Hopefully you can get the SSN or ITIN soon if the landlords you found are all saying he can't even stay there as an occupant or guest because they can't do a background check on his criminal past.  Maybe look for a private landlord who is not bound by the big the apartment complex rigid policies.  Good luck!

We've done that already and the social security office gave us a receipt saying it could take up to 4 weeks. We've been calling them all week because we are now over the 4 week mark. They said that USCIS has to verify his I94. Today we had an appointment with USCIS to see what the hold up is and they just told us "social security numbers can take a while." Even though the SS office said up to 4 weeks. Ugh.

Problably is that Social Security Snap program could not communicate with The SAVE program of USCIS

Maybe so, because we checked the SAVE program before we went to apply for the SSN and his information was there, so we shouldn't have even needed the manual verification. We waited until 3 weeks after he arrived before applying.

SNAP communicates with SAVE automatically however if the CSR or CR load the SNAP wrong coded or for any other reason it could not communicate with SAVE you get that 4 week letter.

Sometimes the SSA officer must go back again and verify the status to approve and create the ssn but most of the time they forget because is not a priority for the agency. Call them or visit them after the first 2 weeks if you haven’t recieved the card with the letter. Best days to go is wendsday  around 11:30-1145am because they close at 12pm and they are eager to cleared the lobby fast. (At least that’s what we do in my office😂)

Since the landlord already said that he wont give because a person doesn't have SSN, means landlord is in xxxxxxxx if you decide to report it.

If he had just said that we are unable to rent it to you, it would have been fine.

The purpose of the SSN is to do a BC / credit run, since he just came here, he is not going to have it, but that shouldn't be a thorn.

You could:

1. Submit the i-94 as proof

2. submit an ITIN number instead of SSN

You obviously have never been a LL and it shows with your statement.

If the 90 data period is over or close to ending then they won't give you a SSN without the EAD.
