Yes they are not part of the Adjustment of Status paperwork.. they are 2 documents available to those who are applying for AOS... without them the applicant cannot work or return to the US if they leave, until the AOS process has been completed and the GC is in hand 

AOS takes 12 to 15 months .. EAD and AP when filed concurrently with the AOS application are fee waived and take 5-7 months 

Usually recommended to apply for both at the same time as the AOS

You will be better getting your information off the USCIS webpages .. as not all info on third party sites is correct... and wisdom says go to the official source
