When they assign a case number...does that mean they are ready to ship it to the embassy?  Or do they still need proof read and approve?

What does getting your NVC case number give one differently than they already have besides "POM"  Peace of Mind.  I can see that from NOA2 to leaving NVC is about 4-5 weeks. Then another 4-6 weeks to Interview,  60-90 days after NOA2 , 180-220 from the start. Depends on your luck, could be less or could be a lot more!!

With case number you're able to check your visa status at CEAC and see when it left for the embassy, when the embassy got it, when it's ready for the next steps and later on when the visa is issued. NVC doesn't do checks nor it approves or deny K1 visas, they just put you in the sistem and forward your case to the respective embassy to be processed further, the interview stage. Depending on the country you're able to book your medical with the case number and also get your interview date.

There are checks at NVC.

When they receive the approved I-129f from USCIS, they check to ensure that it’s been stamped. NVC will occasionally receive a petition from USCIS and it does not have the appropriate approval stamp in the upper left-hand corner. They are also checking to make sure that the three criminal questions have been answered. He noted that there are times when the petitioner will forget to complete those questions and those questions are subsequently missed by the adjudicator.  In both of these instances the case will then be sent back to USCIS. If one of these things occur with a case file recently received from USCSI, NVC would know within the first week of receiving the case.

I agree with the rest of your post.

Thanks. when I query the case status with receipt#, it provides me the NOA1 date.

That's what it did for me as well until the NOA2 went through. I checked periodically for awhile and then daily when I saw similar timelines getting 2's.

Here is a nugget of information: You can't hurry it along at all. You have to wait for P3 which takes 2-4 weeks from Ready. Comply with what they ask for in P3 (the actual one they send you) by sending them a copy of the signed P3 checklist, your DS-160 confirmation and your Passport Bio. Then they send you P4. Then they tell you to register to schedule and you'll wait some more for interviews to open up, which only happens once a month during the last week of the month for two months ahead UNLESS you are lucky and you scoop up a cancellation. Get your medical appointment first so you can schedule the interview shortly afterwards.

Packet 3: https://ca.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/27/2016/07/Packet3Instructions-K1.pdf  And Packet 4 for reference also: https://ca.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/27/2016/03/Packet4-MTL.pdf

For all things dealing with the US Consulate in Canada head on over to the sub-forum for Canada where they will answer your questions for the processing of your visa from their personal experience. Link:

Birth Certificate and Police Certificate information

Thank you! I had already found the P3 and printed that off awhile ago, so no surprises there. As far as the P4 guideline it says to have the I-864 stuff together, but P3 says I-134?? A little confused there. Very helpful to know about the birth certificate as he has the wallet sized and not the long form, so I just sent him the info on how to get that taken care of.

1. Here is some additional information. As was stated in the Canadian sub-forum there is an "emergency order" application in Ontario. You need the birth cert that is CERTIFIED COPY OF BIRTH REGISTRATION that has the parents name. You don't want the "parental cert" that is a wallet sized one with parents names but no place of birth, doctors who attended birth etc. The parental one is for parents travelling with kids to prove custody in an easy to use/travel with format. Hope this clears up your question. CALL the registrar and tell them you need to do an emergency application otherwise you will be waiting 15+ weeks. Absolutely the long form is a required LIVE document needed at the interview or you'll get rejected.  I hope this info is helpful and best of luck.

2. It should be the I-134. The I-864 is for AOS and for other types of visa's of which the K-1 does not subscribe to the I-864 until after marriage.

Question: why does the NOA2 letter say valid from this date to this date. What does that mean?

9 FAM 41.81 N6.2 Validity of a K-1 Petition
(CT:VISA-2165; 08-21-2014)
An approved K-1 visa petition is valid for a period of four months from the date of USCIS action (NIA2) and may be revalidated by the consular officer any number of times for additional periods of four months from the date of revalidation, provided the officer concludes that the petitioner and the beneficiary remain legally free to marry and continue to intend to marry each other within 90 days after the beneficiary's admission into the United States.

That's what I thought, I guess it just threw me for a loop when I read that in the P4 link. That must be more geared for 130 applicants. Or perhaps I've spent so much time researching everything that form #'s and requirements start running together in my head 😜

I have been searching around but couldn't find anything. Any idea what the packet 3 looks like from my country?

NVC has not received our petition yet, last I checked was on 4/22. I will try them again on Monday.  NOA2 was on 4/9.
