I think since it has become somewhat of a tradition for Presidents to release their tax returns, all future Presidents should donate their salary.

Not just politicians... NO ONE should.have to disclose their tax returns under duress.

I've never seen Al's tax transcripts, but it's no secret he cheated his way out of paying them (at least for a.while).

The IRS knows, and that's what really matters, yes?

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Is it that you don't care if politicians cheat on their taxes or that you only care if they get caught?

That's a fair point, I have to agree.

I like to see consistency on this. If a politician owes taxes for whatever reason (including avoidance) but has taken the steps towards paying off their debt, then I don't really care. If it is a criminal issue like tax evasion, then I think we have the right to know. I could not support a candidate to be entrusted with our countries financial assets when they cant be trusted with their own. I don't care what political affiliation they claim.

You know exactly what I am trying to say, it hasn't changed in all the years here on CEHST that it's been discussed.

Tax returns are a personal affair between the payer and US government.  When a big enough "persona" gets caught, it usually gets made public.  That's how we know about Sharpton, Abrams, etc.  If you or I owed $2,000 in taxes, even if we didn't pay in a reasonable amount of time,  no one would ever know.

Trump supposedly owes El Paso over $500K, and we knew about it PDQ.  Don't you think if he was in violation of federal tax laws, we would have heard about it already?  I do.

If I owed taxes to the IRS, who else would know besides myself, my accountant and the IRS? In theory, it's no different for anyone. If a politician owes taxes, the only way we find out is they release that information or if someone leaks that information. Offering that information voluntarily is a show of faith, but not required, and certainly not foolproof. Many shady people have immaculate tax returns.

I guess I am asking because I have not given inconsistent answers on this. As I have always said, If Trump didn't want to release his tax returns and if people still wanted to vote for him, that is their prerogative(s). I don't need to see Trump's (or Clinton's) tax returns to ascertain their honesty. I already had enough information. At the same time I don't care if AOC owes taxes. If she doesn't pay them, eventually it will catch up to her, either legally, or at the polls. If she does pay them then fair enough. Millions of people owe taxes.

I'm not sure if you're implying that my answers are inconsistent,  but I don't really see it.

Just think, if everyone who owed their back taxes paid up, the ~$83 billion would more than pay for the wall.  Or go towards helping our vets.

I wasn't implying anything.  Just wondering since you didn't want to know about Trump's taxes but you started the topic about AOC. That's why I asked the question.

I posted it in March when it was made public.  I still do not know anything about her tax returns, nor do I care to.  But if she has been shown to have run afoul of the law vis a vis owing back taxes, I think it's relevant to her position. As is Stacy Abrams.  And Al Sharpron.  And anyone se who has been outed for owing taxes.  Yes, they are but a couple out of millions.

I have never taken a peek at anyone's tax return who are public figures.  Not Obama, Clinton, Bush.  Only my close personal friends who have asked my advice on their returns.  Just not something I find a need to do I reckon.

As much as a woody as the swamp has for trump, don't you think if he commited tax fraud the IRS would be all over him. The IRs is still weaponized from  the Obama days

I doubt if he committed tax fraud. He is paying a lot of money to get it done right. They are probably pretty creative but I doubt if they are on the wrong side of the law. I don't think that's what people were thinking. They were looking at where his money went, not how much he owed the IRS.

It actually surprises me when they do get caught. For the amount of money a lot of them deal with, they should be paying someone to get it right. Like when John Kerry screwed up his capital gains on collectibles. That's an amateur mistake that the IRS catches every time. John Kerry shouldn't be using Turbo Tax.
