They already got driver licenses in 12 states. You know why, because it is cheaper for them to have driver licenses and be able to buy insurance, then for them to drive illegally and no one pays for all the accidents.

I just found this to be fascinating. Not just for illegal status but for other visa holders that maybe couldn't have drivers licenses without certain documentation. Not sure if that would even impact other immigrants/nonimmigrants.

The driver licenses don't give them any status, they're still illegals. It just allows them to drive and more importantly, they have to have insurance. Purely economic

Right! I totally agree with you. But what about K1 Visa holders that have to wait until EAD and AP? Would something like this mean that they don't have to wait 5-6 months for a drivers license?

No, K-1s are legal, they can't do that, unless they want to become illegals and subject to deportation....

Look, I'm not saying it's fair. Life is never fair. What about the H4 spouses that have NO ability to work at all....

K1 can and do get licenses designed for illegals.

Now I do not know if this was envisaged, I seriously doubt it.

In Colorado there are driver's licenses for illegals and K1 can get those as well.  But most people would prefer to have the driver's license that shows they are legal obviously so wait for the EAD.

I was a K1 but the rules were different so I had no gap.

Now I absolutely would get the illegal one until I could get the regular one.

I guess it just depends on your situation. I do not live in a major metropolitan area where public transportation is readily available. It's a hike to get anywhere! I just thought something like this would benefit those that would like to have a little bit more freedom during the waiting game.

These are mere DLs, and in a way to keep track of undocumented. These are not RealID that require substantial legal presence documentation and, beginning next year, would be required to board plans or enter Federal facilities.

H4 spouse can work with a spousal i140 approved. Moreover being on an H1 is a privilege and no one forces a spouse to be married to an H1. They (should) know that before getting married.
