Buying new is for suckers. Buy at least 2 years old and save 30% in depreciation. You still get a like new car.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

yes, I would buy a car from a rental place. I have before I bought a 1986 Toyota Celica I dont know what company cause it was thru my cr. union. I had no problems with it. I just had the timing belt break and other small things. like the door handle broke. It cost me $45 for the door handle.. the car mechanic next to my dad's store just put a C clip in it and it worked fine. I gave him $20 and return the door handle :P

I am on My second VW Diesel Jetta. The first one not one ounce of problems. I was just stuipd and got a car much more then I could afford and the high gas prices. I had to get a new one cause it was hard to find a used one.

Take care

Demo's can be a nice in-between. 4-5K miles and a good chunk off the new price tag.

When buying new, you basically pay extra for the full lifetime of the warranty.

** that warranty. You have to do and pay dearly for all the routine services and all. That alone costs you more than a few minor repairs you might have in case something goes wrong. I've had my Nissan for about 6 years (over 100K miles) now and I spent nothing in repairs on it other than oil changes, brake pads, tires and the like. You know, the regular wear and tear. That sucker just runs w/o any of the expensive mandated check-ups. I love it!

i agree..i never buy new unless it is an exceptional deal........

Yes reason that little nissan is not crapping on you is your keeping it up. doing all the Preventive maintenance. so you are basicly not giving it a chance to ####### out.

But someday it will. :) everything that is mechancial will break. it is a given law of mechanics.

Yogi,

Sounds to me like ET isn't doing preventative maintenance. He is only reacting to problems that occur. ET, correct me if I'm misinterpreting your post.

I have a 1990 Nissan with less than 80K on the clock and the previous owner never did any unkeep on it at all! We changed all the normal bits (oil, air filters etc.) and the battery (because some random jerk decided it was a great laugh to leave my car door open all night so the light stayed on - door couldn't be locked because of the freezing issue) but other than that, she's a great little car. Not so pretty, but mechanically sound as a bell. Cost us..... $600 :D

I'd love an Audi A4 or a new Jetta, but one has to be reasonable. I wouldn't have a problem buying one from a rental place if I got to check it out and make sure that hidden things like the struts and suspension hadn't been hammered into the ground.

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

I bought a used Nissan, and I suspect it was a rental because of high miles (28K for a 2 yr car). It runs great, and except for tires, breaks, oil changes, and service (30K, 60K) the only things that happened was the alternator failure (expensive) and had to replace the drive belts (cheap).

I would definitely recommend a Japanese car for reliability (Toyota, Honda, Nissan. Mazda if it does not have Ford engine or transmission).

Especially if this is your wife's first car and she's not that used to driving, buy an inexpensive car. Insurance is cheaper and you can forego comprehensive after a while.

You can always buy an aftermarket exended warranty right on the internet.
