I’ve been in the US for a month, I haven’t received any social or green card in the mail. How long does it take to get both social and green card?  Thank you.

Visit the Social Security office. That's what my friends do to get their ssn

I thought it valid for six months.

The visa itself was valid to use for six months, but once you enter the US and it is stamped, then it functions as a GC for 12 months.

As to the SSA, our cousins recently arrived with DVs, they did receive their GCs in a few weeks, but no SSC. We went down to the SSA and even though they checked the box for an SSC, the clerk at the SSA could not find any evidence in their system, so they promptly applied for one and received them a week or so later.  A couple of suggestions, if you go to the SSA before you get your GC, take the information that shows your stamped visa is in fact a GC, for some reason there are clerks at the SSA that don’t understand that.  Additionally, if going to the SSA, go in the afternoon as they don’t seem to be too busy.

Good Luck!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi All,

I travelled to USA on 17 Feb. I'm also waiting to receive my Green Card :(

The online update shows status as In Process. A cousin of mine who came in Jan this year got his within GC within 4 weeks itself.. So can't do much just have to keep waiting I guess
