ITIN - do I really need to send original passport?!

So it seems I need to get an ITIN before my husband can submit his tax return (apparently even if he files as single, since he's married it's asking him for my ITIN/SSN).

From what I can see, IRS is asking for the ORIGINAL or a Certified Copy (which according to their instructions needs to be issued by the Australian Government - the closest consulate is Chicago and TBH I don't feel like spending $500 to get there and back).

I really don't like the idea of mailing my passport anywhere and I honestly cannot justify the time and cost to go to Chicago to get the "official certified" copy that their instructions say.

Anyone have any ideas for options at all?

There are ITIN Certifying Acceptance agents that can help you get the ITIN number without mailing your passport I just brought my wife's in yesterday, they did a 30 second video call with her to verify, and it was finished.

Also, your husband can't file taxes as "single" if you are married.   He needs to file as Married filing separately or   Married Filing Jointly.
