     I am the us citizen, brought my wife here in 2016 in IR-1, her daughter my stepdaughter wanted to finish high school before joining us. 

     So here we are, and now I’m a bit confused because on the I-130 there is a box for stepchild, but I am under the impression my wife as LPR needs to file since I haven’t adopted my stepdaughter.

No you the US Citizen can file for her it will be faster. Stepparents can file for the stepchildren 18 and under.

Thanks, she turns 17 this year, but I assume as long as it’s filed before she turns 18 it’s fine?

File now its going to take 12 to 15 months to get her here.
