This is a strange question.

My future step son is planning on getting married in a few weeks, to a girl in the National Guard.

Somehow, HE thinks (I don't know about her) that if he marries her and she gets pregnant that she won't have to go on active duty.

Is this true? I KNOW there are woman over in Iraq right now with little babies at home.

I really don't know much about the National Guard or it's policies, and I was hoping someone here might.

Um I also know love is blind, but we'd like to know for our own peace of mind. There won't be any I told you so's.

Once you're in the military, it's their say. I don't know how many people I can recollect that were called upon for duty who's girlfriends or wives were pregnant. In reality, just because she's pregnant, he's still got to go. I remember my drill sergent telling me on my first day of boot camp, "Welcome to the closest thing we have to communism in the USA! Your a$$ now belongs to Uncle Sam and me!".

Sorry. I didn't know he was a she in the Guard. The same rule still applies. I don't think they would send a pregnant women into a combat area. But the military might have a different thought about it. Whatever the military says, do as told and don't ask questions. I hope she realizes is that EVERY ounce of her life and being belongs to the military. She made the obligation. That includes her body also. I had a girlfriend who was stationed in Turkey and she fell asleep while on the beach at the Mediterranean Sea. She got sunburned and they court-martialed her for "destruction of government property".

A pregnancy test of all females is required within 72 hours of the actual deployment...if she is pregnant, she will not have to go on active duty and she can actually file to get out...however, if someone does that on purpose, they lose a lot of respect in my book...how can you soak up the benefits and then decide, hey they are deploying, I don't want to do it...lack of character in my opinion.

hmmm, ah yeah. I'm so frustrated right now, and he's not even mine :( but I worry to death about him.

*muttering* conniving lil beach....

altimixdj, that's what we thought. It might delay her going, but she's still obligated to go later. So much for sitting back and enjoying the rest of our lives together, UGH.....will never be the baby's fault though.

Hopefully lightening might strike in the next week and knock some sense into them.

Thanks

Pregnancy is an out, for women in the service, espcially those about to be deployed.

However, it is a black mark against the commitment they made.

Not a good idea at all. One has essentially breached the contract. Could have significant ramifications....

We're hoping she's not pregnant right now, the two are giving us the run around and insisting on getting married in 11 days. When I was down there the other week, they told me they were trying to have a baby so she didnt' have to go. I told them, they'll send you after the baby is born anyway.

Hard to have respect for someone who will use a baby to get out of a such a serious commitment :( It makes me wonder what kind of wife and parent she'll be.

Thank you for informing me about all this. I appreciate it and I will talk to my SO, and hopefully together we can figure out a way to stop this before it goes too far, is it hasn't already.

You've told me what we need to know, and confirmed our suspicions.

Thanks again.

It is correct that being pregnant will get her out of her obligation to deploy. As William33 said, it may have ramifications. But as for having to deploy at a later date, it is highly unlikely. Reserve and guards deploy as units. They go as a team, for a certain length of time. If shes not medically cleared to go when the team leaves, its highly unlikely that they will send her to Iraq as her team is mid-deployment. I have seen people purposely break their leg, fake illnesses, and get pregnant in order to get out of deployment.

What are with these people's sense of patriotism when doing active duty? We haven't had the draft since the early 70's. No one forced them to say the oath when they enlisted. Those signing up know the commitment they are obligated. I can't respect anyone who purposely does stuff like that to avoid their commitment when they're called upon. Jeez! My father was active during the Korean War, Vietnam, and deployed to Cuba during the Cuban Missle Crisis. The only thing that happened when I was active duty, was the missle fired at Khadafi. I thought I was going to be deployed there. I was ready to go because I knew my commitment. But Khadafi wasn't going to fight. So much for any wartime action during my enlistment.
