Interesing read! Here's an excerpt...

Over the last decade, the U.S. State Department estimates that the number of Americans living in Mexico has soared from 200,000 to 1 million (or one-quarter of all U.S. expatriates). Remittances from the United States to Mexico have risen dramatically from $9 billion to $14.5 billion in just two years. Though initially interpreted as representing a huge spike in illegal workers (who send parts of their salaries across the border to family), it turns out to be mainly money sent by Americans to themselves in order to finance Mexican homes and retirements.

...

An English-language paper in Puerto Vallarta, for instance, recently applauded the imminent arrival of a new shopping mall that will include Hooters, Burger King, Subway, Chili's and Starbucks. Only Dunkin' Donuts (con salsa?), the paper complained, was still missing.

The gringo footprint is largest (and brings the most significant geopolitical consequences) in Baja California, the 1,000-mile long desert appendage to the gridlocked state-nation governed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Indeed, Baja real-estate websites ooze almost as much hyperbole as those devoted to stalking the phantom menace of illegal immigrants— just in a far more upbeat tone when it comes to the question of immigrant invasions.

So what?

My brother has a work permit in Mexico, though he lives and works in Fort Worth, Texas. It's required as he is down there so frequently on business, and according to him they are FAR tougher on immigrants than the US is.

Not fooling anyone.

Mexico is Mexico's problem. I know you think everything wrong with Mexico is big bad America's fault, but this self-flagellation routine is getting VERY old.

That's your opinion, and it's one of isolationism which really is counter to this country's history and ideals. But continue on with your opinion.

The difference is, Steven, most reasonable and rational people agree with me that illegal immigrants have, in fact, broken the law. They agree that unlimited immigration is a BAD idea. They agree that the United States has a right to enforce its borders, and they agree that we don't owe Mexico a squirt of piss.

They also agree that the Mexican government is jam-packed with hypocrites who beat and shoot people sneaking across their own southern border while they beat their chests and howl whenever the United States even HINTS at enforcing its own sovereignty. Interesting that you choose to align yourself with such hypocrites while supporting a system that gives you no benefits other than cheap lawn care and vegetables. I could be inflammatory and ask you if you're a fan of neo-industrial feudalism, but I'm above that.

Yah well he also feels guilty because his great-great-great-great-great-grandparents may have owned a few slaves.

They call it "white guilt", apparently.

I am 1/2 Dutch. I know my Dutch ancestors started the trade. I don't feel guilty. I guess my tan caused it to even out.

All of my ancestors either arrived after slavery ended or were living in non-slave states, so I have no guilt. None.

So what? As Steven said, it's an interesting read. What's with the "not fooling anyone"? No one said there was any deceit going on - it's just an article that is interesting about Americans moving to Mexico. It doesn't mean anything more than that.

As for the FAR tougher on immigrants comment, it's true. And yet there are also people living and working there illegally. So what?

That's a mighty bold appeal to authority...

But I'll take your appeal to authority and ante it up one - most people are rational and reasonable about issues when the debate isn't framed in such a way to create an us vs. them, or black and white. ;)

I suppose that explains peoples' reactions to you, then, since you frame EVERYTHING in an us vs. them, black & white way. You do, really. I can't decide whether to put your bleeding heart ridiculousness on ignore or to carry on reading it, since it is annoying yet thoroughly entertaining in a jejune sort of way.

Only if you highlight (and read as) selectively as you did. The actual claim made was far more specific than what you chose to color red. Re-read the statement as a whole and you'd find that only ignorant people or those in very deep denial could not agree with the very specific statement. ;)
