Since you are currently residing in Canada, and don't plan on moving to the US until a year or so from now, I would humbly suggest you look into the DCF option. There's quite a bit of information on the DCF process, so start reading. :) If you, the US citizen, are considered to be a permanent resident of Canada, this option will work. That would mean you could get married in NS and then do the paperwork from there. You would also be able to submit the initial paperwork through Halifax (you'll have to do some research on that to make sure they can do that for you -- the office is quite small with odd working hours if I remember correctly), but the interview and the bulk of the work will be taken care of in Montreal.

Planning ahead is a good thing -- read lots, ask questions, and make informed decisions -- this site can be a definite help in that regards. :)

PS. I'm originally from Cape Breton, and I miss it!

Hello all, first post for this newbie!

I've got a bit of a similar type question to the above along the lines of "what would be the recommended way to do this?". I've read some of the FAQs and Guides (awesome btw); they are really good in telling me what to do once we know what direction we should be going.

Our situation is: I'm a Canadian residing in the US on a TN work visa. I have been here on these visas for approaching 5 years. My fiance is a US citizen. We are planning on getting hitched up this summer. I'm thinking the location of our marriage shouldn't matter too much, but is that really the case? (married here or in Canada?) . Because I am allowed to be here and be working on a separate visa, do we qualify for the I-130? Is it worthwhile to file the K1 fiance visa to get any waiting periods started for AOS after we are married? Or should we wait until after the wedding and do the K3 thing?

I'm not sure why I'm so confused - this must happen all the time to folks right?

Thank you very much! And of course, feel free to give me the RTFM if there's something i should be reading!

Daryl

So here's my question or two.....

Has this particular edition of the Canadian Clearing House thread been helpful?

Should I look into creating an updated version (part three) to replace part two and be more vigilant in its upkeep?

Or should I have the Captain remove this thread for good?

Cassie....I'm so sorry. I think I might have looked at this thread when I first started the process, then completely forgot about it.

Some of the threads posted on here are probably outdated, but looking through it now (sorry again) it would have saved me alot of questions.

If you have time time, I think you should just update it.

i don't understand the point of this thread.... ?

The point, when this thread was originally started on the old VJ, was to have links to all Canadian related information threads in one master thread. The links were organized according to topic (Montreal information, Vancouver information, moving, etc etc etc), so we could go to one place instead of searching through many many threads all over VJ. When we switched over to the current site, we could no longer access the old links, and this thread never really got organized like the old one -- and that was my fault. I might just get Ewok to unpin this thread.

I wouldn't unpin it...it's one of the hotter topics for the Canadians. I didn't bother reading all of it from the beginning myself, but the info here sure was helpful. Otherwise it will just be lost, n'est ce pas?
