Traveling to Canada by land - GC Holder, Canadian Citizen, Expired Passport

Hello!

I need to travel home to handle some family business. This came a bit last minute, and I won't be able to complete my passport renewal and receive the new one back) on time. My current passport expires 03/14. I am a Green Card holder and we plan to cross by land. How are my odds at being able to cross? Any specific strategy? Any way I can renew my passport in some expedited manner?

Thanks in advance.

You can renew your Canadian passport at certain offices in as little as 24 hours, but of course for a crazy fee.

Of note:  my husband and I live in Buffalo (so the NY/ON) border and we cross frequently to visit my family and friends by land.  Every time we come back, CBP just wants to see my greencard.  They have no interest in seeing my passport.  I always have it with me, bc I’m paranoid, but the last time we came home, I just handed the greencard, and I had no problem.

To err on the side of caution though, I would get your passport renewed on an expedited basis while you’re in Canada.

Enter before 3/14 and renew it ASAP while you're in Canada. I would think you'd need a valid passport to get back into the US, but the comment above suggests otherwise (but for peace of mind, you probably should hold a valid passport).

The fee isn't that crazy, it's close to the price paid to renew from the USA.

I strongly suggest you apply in person at a Passport Canada office (not Service Canada).  That being said, you can cross by land using only your green card.
