I have a question about the POE, I've flown to Atlanta twice now, both times through LAX. My international flight's arrival gate and my domestic departure gate were opposite each other in the same terminal.
I fly with AA and they usually have their gates all connected (underground tunnel) without the need to go through customs from my experience.

Do i need to go through customs anyway and do my POE interview in LA or am i able to do it in ATL? and not worry about missing my connecting flight.

Cheers!

All international arrivals (non pre cleared)  are herded into the international arrival facility,  no such thing as being able to change airplanes (even to another international flight) without going through immigration at any USA airport

Just did this at LAX. Can confirm. Immigration and customs at LAX including rechecking of bags. Standard procedure at first arrival point in US. Unless you are flying from a pre-clearance location.

Finally done...

Your post is confusing.  So you traveled from Sydney to Atlanta twice, and both times when you connected through LAX you went directly from your arriving international flight to the domestic connection without going through CBP at all??
