In case this helps someone... I obtained my SSN quickly after landing in the US in my maiden name. I went back to the social security office and they wouldn't change my name... I pushed the issue and they reluctantly agreed to submit the name change request with the following evidence: marriage certificate, passport, and I-94 (a lot of eye rolling on their part).

Good news is that it was accepted and I received new SSN card with my married name in the mail today. Took the SSN card along with marriage certificate to the DMV today and now I have a state ID in my married name as well :-)

Awesome, glad you were able to get it done! What is the expiration date on your State ID? And do you know if it is "Real ID" e.g. does it have gold star on it?

That is great to know! I had a similar problem...had a SS card with my maiden name from last year. Went to the SS office a few weeks ago to try to change my name on my card, and also encountered tons of reluctance and eye rolling. They just wouldn't do it. I've decided to try and wait for EAD before going back (which is also what they ended up suggesting)...fingers crossed it won't be an eternity before I receive it. :(

So since everyone in this group is now waiting, wanted to see how people are doing with this brand new life. For us it’s been a challenge! Wonderful and hard at the same time. My now husband has done a great job keeping himself busy. He’s Irish so he goes to a local pub a few days a week to watch sports and has met a ton of people that way. He’s signed up with the volunteer fire department, gotten his drivers license (never had one before!), takes guitar lessons, and cooks dinner every night and lunch for me every day. But boy is it a transition! To go from working your butt off to coming here and trying to start a new life but not being able to actually start your own life...it’s hard! He’s traveled a bunch to see people he knows who live here or are visiting the east coast. He’s grateful for this time...first time in his life he hasn’t worked. But it’s also weird. He’s basically gone through his savings. He wants to get going on this new life but it’s a weird limbo waiting game with no info. Weekends are so great because we can finally be together with no sadness about someone leaving. It’s just all very surreal! How is everyone else doing?

Wow! He sounds super productive! How did you guys get the driving license? For me in Ohio I have to prove my legal residency? I’m guessing they need a green card because I don’t know how else to prove that whilst I wait for my AOS to go thru. I really want to start driving and it’s hard to rely on my husband all the time.

I worked my butt off too in England so it’s weird to come here and literally have so much free time! I’ve just been studying for my LSAT ( law admissions test), cooking lunch and dinner for my husband, gymming and i want to start piano lessons!  I’ve made one friend through bumble bff and now she’s become my best friend haha. Other than that I’m not homesick. I do miss my mother and sister and all my friends but I just call them everyday and I feel better.

It feels amazing to wake up to my husband everyday without worrying that one of us has to leave!

In PA he only needed to show SS number and residency (he opened a bank account once he had SS number so he had bank account statement and letter from SS office), plus you can bring the person you live with (me), and we showed marriage certificate and K1 visa and I-94. That was enough. He doesn’t actually have a car since I use it to go to work every day and he has no money to buy one lol but he will start driving me to work once a week so he can keep the car for the day and run errands. I just have to get over my fear of letting him drive my nice car lol. But we live in a city area so a car is not necessary. Plus he bought a bike when he got here so he’s been getting around on that a lot.

Okay brilliant! Thanks so much for your help! I'm going to maybe call them or go in and see if they will accept these. Thanks again!

All states have their own rules. For California, I brought my property tax bill and our marriage certificate, which proved her residence via marriage certificate. They do want SSN. She got state ID (not a real ID) which doesn't expire for 5 years and learners permit that will expire when her I-94 does (I have no idea why ...) but that allowed her to learn to drive, she is making pretty awesome progress in that for someone who has never driven before.

Expiration is ~5 years. No Real ID - that requires proof of citizenship 😕
