I'm with you hydrogen is the way to go, but unfortunately there is so much resistence (at the moment), for obviously selfish reason, that it's going to take a long time to get there... Well, at least, longer that I'd like to see..

I am all for hydrogen, if someone can tell me how to produce it without using oil. Nuclear power is the only way that I see, baring some huge advance in the efficiency and cost of solar panels.

Also, keep in mind that cars use as much oil being produced (about 45%) than they consume in their 10 year service life. The steel, paint, plastics, aluminum and transportation all consume quite a bit of oil. Hydrogen burning cars right now would require more oil up front to build, and oil would still be the cheapest way of getting the hydrogen they burn.

Most oil isn't even used for gasoline anyway. Chemical production, heating and power generation use most of it. Nuclear power and electric heating would actually make a difference in two of these.

This is showing promise.

If it can work in a car it should be able to be scaled up for anything. You can also get hydrogen from using solar cells located near a lake or the ocean. Zero energy used and no pollution. Like I said, if we had the will we could get out of this addiction to oil.

Lawmakers from both parties are hearing from constituents about soaring gasoline prices, which Wednesday hit a record national average of $3.22 for a gallon of self-serve regular. So they are working furiously to respond - even if there is little they can do to provide immediate relief.

This is insane. Of course there is price gouging in the oil market. It isn't controlled by US Corporations though. There is a cartel (OPEC, you may have heard of it). The sole purpose of this cartel is to manipulate prices through collusion of the suppliers. This is of course not legal in the US. But, the US does not control most of the worlds oil.

Actually the price of crude oil is low right now - OPEC's pricing is not being reflected at the pump... (see below)

The Answer is "The Market / Technology / Government."

"Technology" is not even half an answer. The problem of oil addiction is not an individual problem. As Bush acknowledged, "America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world." Now that's a problem for America, but you can't expect people to volunteer to cut back on their lifestyle. We will have to take a stand as a nation, just as we do on other major issues.

Bush acknowledged this with his proposals for more research: about $9 billion extra per year, compared with $300 billion+ per year for fossil imports and $100 billion per year for Iraq. It doesn't add up. Worse, he's got the wrong technology: corn ethanol and hydrogen will bankrupt us before they dent our fossil imports.

And that's where the market comes in. The only way to get low-cost effective change is to move some money around and let the market find the cheapest response. There are a couple of ways to do this: (1) a tax-and-return program on oil, and (2) financial incentive for auto makers. A Tax/Return program taxes a product but then returns all the tax revenue to the consumers. But everyone gets the same return. Someone who uses twice the average amount of foreign fossil will find they pay twice the average tax, but only get back the average. Someone who conserves will get back more than they pay in tax.

Detroit Stuck in Neutral Gas Prices Rise Again, Big Three's Current Products Don't Match High-MPG Talk

By KAREN LUNDEGAARD, Wall Sreet Journal, Jan. 26, 2006

At the recent auto show in Detroit, GM ... unveiled its first major hybrid vehicles. DaimlerChrysler used dancers with willowy scarves to introduce the "cleanest diesel on the planet." Ford unveiled sport-utility hybrid concept that can run on 85% ethanol.

- - - - - - -

HYPE VS. REALITY But for all the big talk, most of these vehicles won't be on the market for months, if ever, leaving Detroit's auto makers stuck with strategies that depend heavily on gas-thirsty sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks just as prices at the pump are climbing again.

The US auto companies fought fuel-efficiency standards to a stand-still years ago, so they could stay "stuck in neutral" while Toyota and Honda whizzed past with super-efficient hybrids.

Good point. This gesture by congress seems a bit shortsighted.

IMHO it's a populist move by a Democratic Congress that is short on approval ratings due to not living up to any of its election promises.

I guess its because I'm a European and drive a fuel efficient car, but I just can't get that hot under the collar about paying $3 for a gallon of gas.

I tend to agree, after just returning from the UK where the price of regular unleaded is now around $8.57 a US gallon !

It's cheaper here in Yorkshire; right now it's between $7.50-$8 per gallon, depending on the day's exchange rate. :crying:

I know...but I like to feign innocence.

I'm thinking the only way to do find that story is to scroll back to my early posts. I can't think what a donkey would be to do with it though, that's got me puzzled...but this is ME we are talking about of course. A donkey could figure into it.

Course, everyone is going to be wondering why I am talking about donkeys in a Gas thread now. ;)
