Recently i have been searching for new jobs opportunities and sometimes just after sending my Resume in a very preliminary phone interviews they ask me for a copy of my GC and how I got mine. I was reviewing and found that this is not legal to ask you to send a copy of your green card. It has happened to you?

Some employers just don’t know, unfortunately.

I started a new job last month, and while they didn’t inquire about my authorization to work prior to my first day (though I did explicitly state it in my covering letter), when I filled out the I9 for e-verify, the HR admin refused to accept my greencard only, and requested my driver license and SS card (which is still restricted bc I don’t have 3 hours to wait at the SS office).  Personally, I don’t really care that she did that, but whoever processes the e-verify checks noticed that she took all of that and suddenly the VP of HR had me

in her office to apologize.  Again, didn’t bother me, but it is not what they should be doing, and opens them to the potential for litigation.

Not everyone is familiar with immigration matters.  Even my husband’s family is shocked at the journey - they thought I acquired citizenship immediately upon marrying him.

They shouldnt ask for gc before even extending job offer to candidate. If and when you accept the job offer, then only they can ask for gc. My advise is look for job somewhere else. And asking how you got gc is a rediculous question, its not their business how you got it.

I agree with the above posts. It could be ignorance on the part of the employer or it could be some kind of discrimination, which is obviously illegal. The only question they can legally ask is "Are you authorized to work in the US?" and if you are offered the job, usually they will ask for some kind of proof of this.

When I was job hunting I got a few calls from temp agencies, but it were all outsourced agencies. They told me they needed a copy of my EAD before they could decide if I could even be a candidate for interview. The moment I told them I wasn't going to do that they always 'had to talk to their manager' and hung up. Never heard from them again.

Imo, if they insist to get the copy before the offer, I think it's super fishy.

When I got the phone interview for the job that I got now they didn't know about EAD but also didn't ask for a copy. They simply asked me to explain what it is, how it works and that's it. They ran it through HR, HR said EAD is fine to work, and they just told me to take my EAD card on my first day and we'll take it from there. That right there is a good company imo.
