I think you have to file for adjustment of status and then Advance Parole, which would allow you to travel and then come back to the US... it will take at least several months though... read the guides on the adjustment of status, that should help!

You say you've been trying to get your papers straightened out for 6 years. What type of visa did you enter the U.S. with? Are you currently out of status? If so, for how long? The answers to these questions will help to provide a more accurate response.

You can file I-130 and I-485 together and adjust status. If you have been out of status 180 days or more, you should not leave the U.S. until you have a permanent residence card. Advance Parole (I-131) will not protect you from being denied reentry to the U.S. if you incur a ban based on out of status time.

John and Marlene's advice is accurate. As the spouse of a US citizen, who entered legally without the intention of getting married but who did marry, you are eligible to apply for adjustment of status from within the US. Your wife files the I-130 petition and you file the I-485 (AOS) application together. Do not apply for Advance Parole (1-131) as if you leave the country before you get your green card you will not be allowed back in. Once your green card is approved, your out of status time will be forgiven. You may wish to apply for a employment authorization , however so you can work while you wait for your AOS application to be adjudicated. You can submit that form at the same time with the I-130 and I-485 (and my mind has just gone blank on the form number but you will be able to find it easily enough). Good luck and congratulations on your marrige.

Employment Authorization (EAD) is I-765.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
