I think to a degree you take that statement a little too seriously. I don't honestly think that anyone truthfully wants a racist or homophobic attack to be real. In fact, they likely fear the times that it is not real, because to paraphrase the quote from WaPo you've mentioned -- a person faking it diminishes and erodes away true events when they happen. It draws out conspiracy theories on both sides and ultimately distrust. We should always feel badly for a person that is allegedly the victim of such a crime, but we have to let the facts fall as they may. In our current age of speculation-armchair-opinion-twittering-by-minute and shows that are filled with opinion hawkers rather than actual data, the lines blur.

It is an opinion piece. That's just it, an opinion. Everyone has one these days - right or wrong. Inherently there's nothing wrong with the main point of the statement like I said. If his ''attack'' is false it does do damage - does it not? And it's that damage the person with the opinion fears. As for the choice of their words ''need'', well that speaks more about whatever strange psychological state that person is in. They want it to be true, even if terrible, because they are fearful otherwise.

 

If a person goes to your home and chooses to burn Welsh flags, throw things at you and attack you in some way - you'd want to be believed. If you believed that there were others like you, that were being treated similar, you'd likely want them also to be believed. But let's imagine a couple of those people made it up for whatever reason. Now you and others are being ridiculed, hated, and accused of being dishonest. As terrible as the crime might be to you and others, and you wouldn't wish it upon others - you also wouldn't, at the same time want some idiot to make up a false claim either. So on some level, you'd want it to be true, because the alternative is bad but perhaps even more damaging.
